Battle of Wyoming
Wednesday, July 2 at 7:00 pm and 8:30 pm.
Presented by: Bill Bachman
Tickets: $5.
In 1778, 753 Americans were killed as the Revolution raged on. Of that number, 227 died in one day alone in Wyoming Valley, PA. It was the largest single loss of life by British and Indians against Americans that year. This presentation will take viewers back to the decisions and actions that resulted in "The Battle of Wyoming" July 3, 1778. | See www.dietrichtheater.com or phone 836-1022 for times | At The Dietrich By Hildy Morgan I can say this without sounding the least bit vain because I have NOTHING to do with our displays. Nada. Nuttin’. So I can therefore say that our displays are simply incredible – interesting, beautiful, the best the county has to offer of history or art or whatever is being displayed. Last month it was photographs of the most beautiful trees in the county. And for tree lovers ( as you know, I am a card-carrying member of the Trees-Are-The Best-Things-In-The-World club) it was simply breathtaking. So after that I wondered how those Cultural Ladies would come up with something as good as our trees. Well, of course they did. In the Earnshaw Gallery at this time is the “Historic Homes of Tunkhannock Photo Exhibit.” Wow! It’s amazing! The homes and the historic memorabilia are stunning! And all this is thanks to Jessie Reppy Keker. It was her idea and she has worked tirelessly with Margie to see it come to fruition. Wait until you see it! If you love history, and particularly Tunkhannock history, please do come to the gallery (you don’t have to see a movie to come to the gallery) and feast your eyes on the gorgeous, gorgeous display.
There will be a reception Sunday, June 29 from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Gallery to meet the contest winners and to chat with Jessie. Do come. You’ll be so glad you did!
Movies are on hold for one more weekend. We have Kung Fu Panda (which is just adorable) and the final week of the magnificent Indiana Jones. Both such fun movies to start summer vacation! And here are the three movies I know we’re getting (and then I’ll have Sex and The City squeezed in there somewhere – Get Smart (Mmmm – The Rock is in that one!), Wall-E (Pixar at its best!) and Hancock (the big 4th of July movie this summer!). Those are the films that are booked at the present time.
Oh, yeah. On July 16th at 7:00 p.m. we are showing Jeremy Zerechak’s Land of Confusion, about the Iraq war. What makes this especially noteworthy is that so many of our local men and women are in it. Please save the date to see this. We always need to encourage young filmmakers, especially when they are doing documentaries. Docs are a hard art form to get any attention with – most folks want a story, preferably with love or car chases included therein. So I applaud any filmmaker who takes the risk of making a documentary film. I have no idea what side of the war this film comes down on or if it even takes “sides.” I do know that we need to see some of these Iraq war films – none of them have been successful this year, and I’m not sure why. We can’t pretend it isn’t going on, and for families who have lost a loved one or had a darling boy or girl severely wounded, these films are important. So, once again, please set that date aside. Next week you’ll be able to get advanced tix. Jeremy will be here to answer questions about the film on the night of the showing.
So, is it hot enough for you? (heh heh) Good grief! I promised I wouldn’t be a summer whine this year, but I couldn’t keep my word. I was so whiny this week that I wanted to stuff a sock in my own mouth – I was that tired of hearing myself mumbling and grumbling. But, really? Isn’t this so too hot?
A group of very lovely ladies from Florida took a tour of the theater today and even they thought it was miserably hot – and they’re form Florida for heaven’s sake! On days like this when I was a kid, I’d pester and pester my mother to take me swimming in the lake by our house. Poor woman – she never got any peace on a hot day. And, God love her, she never went swimming – hated it – but she’d take Jennie and I and sit there for hours in the shade watching us as we splashed around in that wonderfully cool water. (And then – ready for this??? – when we got out we had to pull the leeches off our legs!) But it was worth every cooling minute. My, my. Can you imagine anyone doing that today? Makes me laugh to think about it!
You have a good week, now. Stay cool. See you at the Dietrich. | Now Showing

| Live at The Dietrich By Erica Rogler In the Dietrich’s Quilting for Kids class last Wednesday, it was touching to see little hands make the final little stitches in their quilts. They each made vibrant cat quilts. Each quilt was uniquely designed by the students through their use of plain and fancy materials. Quilters ranged in ages from six years old to fifth grade in the class. New and returning students quickly learned how to do hand piecing, tie a quilt and finish the quilt with binding. Many of these students will be returning for the summer session of Quilting for Kids.
In the summer session, students ages 6 and up will learn how to create charming teacup quilts. Students are invited to take the class with a friend, mom, or any family member. Students can work on a quilt together or make their own. The class will end with a tea party. The summer session will be held on Wednesdays through July 30 from 3:30 - 5:00 pm. Admission is $6 per student including materials. We would like to thank quilt instructors Terry Keller, Peggy Lane, and Ingrid Rogler for all of their time and energy they put into teaching these classes.
