At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

Sold out!!!!! Really, really, really sold out!!!! Gala night tix are gone, baby, gone and the waiting list is already an impossible twenty-five. (Now see, don’t you wish you’d called for those tix when I first started nagging you?) The sellout is quite exciting because it’s so early. By the middle of last week it looked as if it would sell out by the end of the week, but actually, all of a sudden, there were about a zillion phone calls and by Friday the dreaded waiting list was already in full swing. I think maybe because the movies are so good opening night (no one is dying a horrible lingering death and no one hates their perfectly horrid father) in all the ways our audiences love. There is the magnificent Brideshead Revisited with Emma Thompson and then the darling French farce, Priceless with the wonderfully elfin Audrey Tautou.

But remember this – the rest of festival is not sold out and so you will get to see every film we’re showing over the following two weeks. People keep asking me what films I’m looking most forward to, so I thought I’d tell you that in this week’s column. The ones that I can’t wait to see. So, here goes.

First on my list is “Tell No One”, written by Harlan Coben and starring the beautiful Kristin Scott Thomas. Coben is an American thriller writer (I never miss his books) who takes an “everyman” and puts him in an impossible circumstance from which he must extricate himself. In this one an innocent man is accused of murder and his wife seemingly returns from the dead. Because the novel was bought by a French director, the French have added their particular delicious spin to the story and it was critically acclaimed. That is at the top of my list! (I always love a good murder.)

Next on m my I-can’t-wait-list is “The Visitor.” And the reason is that both our Jeffrey and my totally cool daughter who lives in Vegas gave it rave reviews. It played for many weeks at The Paris, in NYC (which Jeffrey manages) and Shannon saw it in Vegas about two months ago and said it was one of the best films she’s ever seen. “The Visitor” is both melancholy and uplifting at the same time, a film about enjoying the life you’ve been given, and the need to be part of life’s chaotic and joyous symphony no matter how the story turns out.

Okay, corny though it may be, I am so looking forward to the documentary about being…well…”Young @ Heart.” This delightful documentary is about a senior citizens chorus that performs, joyously, all over the world. Or, in other words, it ain’t over till the old lady sings, and by heavens, she’s still singing!

“The Children of Huang Shi” looks so interesting to me. It’s a true story about an unlikely hero (I love those kinds of stories) who saves sixty orphans from the Japanese onslaught. I love WW2 stories, and this one looks to be both suspenseful and rewarding.

And, of course, I am so looking forward to “Vicky Christina Barcelona,” directed by Woody Allen. I tend to love everything he does – his films are such interesting and hilarious studies of human nature at it’s most skewed. Plus, I can’t wait to see Javier Bardem again, after his brutal turn in “No Country For Old Men,” I want to make sure he was just acting in that one and not the seriously cold-blooded killer he portrayed!

And one more mystery – “Transsiberian” has jolted me from my movie lethargy. Emily Mortimer, Woody Harrelson and Ben Kingsley in a mystery that takes place on a train running from Peking to Moscow. Now really, is that exciting or what????

Well, I’ve run out of room, so I’ll talk about the rest of the films next week. As it turns out, this festival is so loaded with goodies that I guess I want to see them all! Far out!

See you at the Dietrich.

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is coming to the Dietrich in just a few days? Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, of course! Scranton Public Theatre will perform this children’s classic on the Dietrich stage on Saturday, September 13th at 11:00 am. This will be the third time we will host this production and boy, is it fun! Admission is $5 each and tickets can be purchased at the Dietrich Theater ticket booth or by calling 570-996-1500. And, did I mention the show is interactive? Your child may have the opportunity to get on stage and play the role of Doc, Dopey, Sleepy, Grumpy, Sneezy, Happy or Bashful.

Can you believe we are already sold out for the fall film festival gala night? Tickets went awfully fast this time around! I am still trying to plan out what movies I hope to catch during festival. I know I want to see Young @ Heart, Priceless, Brideshead Revisited, The Visitor, and Tell No One. Those die-hard festival goers that catch all of the movies always impress me. For a full list of film summaries and show times, visit www.dietrichtheater.com .
