At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

Here’s the thing everyone needs to know about movie companies: They are a law unto themselves and they don’t give a fig about small town theaters. They have no understanding of what it’s like to keep a two screen theater going in a town with a postage stamp population. So they “promise” (and I put that in quotes because a promise from a movie company is no promise at all) us a movie and then they renege and it’s sort of tough darts for us because there is absolutely nothing we can do about it. Nothing at all.

When we first opened this theater I used to rail at the unfairness of it all. “But they can’t do that!” I’d wail. “They really, really can’t!……….Can they?”

But that was over seven years ago and I don’t ask that question any more because to go on and on abut the unfairness of it all is madness. It is, like so much that happens to us, what it is.

Why am I going on about this? Because I was asked to bring in a Christian film called Fire Proof. I had some blank spaces, so I said I’d surely try (although films not handled by major distributors are often difficult for small theaters to get) and try I did. Finally we got them to commit to either October 17th or October 24th. If we couldn’t get it on the first date we’d surely have it on the second. I simply asked the churches to make sure their parishioners came to see the movie at the Dietrich, since those films have a limited audience. Everyone agreed.

This past Friday it seemed there was wiggle room being added to the verbal agreement. “If they had a print” suddenly became part of the vocabulary. Hmmmm. On Monday it was clear – there was no print for us. All the pleading in the world wasn’t going to change that. So all the people I’d promised would see Fire Proof this weekend would not be seeing it (at the Dietrich at any rate). Hopefully next weekend. I’m going to do my best. When I commit to a film I always try very hard to bring it in for people. After all, that’s what a small town movie theater is about – trying to bring a variety of films to our audiences. But I can’t promise. If I’ve learned anything about the business it’s this – promises are fragile and made to be broken.

So, to move on now, we do have two terrific films for you this weekend. We have the wondrous, upbeat, G rated High School Musical 3 in the Evans!!! What good, clean fun! What a perfect family film. Come and bring the kids and we’ll pop some of the best corn you’ll ever have. Ooooooh, can’t wait!

And then, for you adults who love a good shoot-em-up, especially if it takes place in the old west, we have a four star treat for you! Appaloosa is with us for one week only! (Really, I had to bring it in – my husband threatened to go to -- gasp! – another theater if I didn’t!) Plus, quite a few guys who have been very good humored about all the chick-flicks I’ve been bringing in lately asked, most politely, me to bring in a man’s movie! Now, how could I say no?

And don’t forget the wonderful classical guitar duet on Sunday. It’s going to be cold and wintry outside but warm and beautiful inside. Join us for a wonderful, relaxing and classical afternoon.

And I guess that’s all I have to say today. If you are disappointed about Fire Proof, hang in there – hopefully it will be here next week. In the meantime, you have the choice of two really super films. Come and enjoy, enjoy.

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

Last Wednesday night, Dr. Sheldon Spear proved once again just how fascinating our local history is with his talk on “Conflicts in Northeastern Pennsylvania History”. I learned so much from what he shared about the Streetcar Strike of 1915-16 and the United Anthracite Miners’ Rebellion of the 1930s. Those were difficult times for the people of our area and those hardships created animosity in some instances. My favorite part of the night was when some audience members shared what family members who lived during that time period told them about the anthracite rebellion including civil unrest and the fall of the local coal industry.

We will have another chance to take in some local history in just a couple weeks with the showing of Frances Slocum: Child of Two Americas on Sunday, November 2nd at 3:00 pm at the theater. Frances Slocum, a white child of the American Revolution, was stolen by the Delaware Indians from her Quaker family on November 2, 1778, and was not reunited with them for nearly sixty years. Join us for the story of her life, which includes her travels through our area on the anniversary of her kidnapping. This film was written and produced by William Bachman, Florence Howanitz, and Jonathan Pineno. Tickets are $5.00 each and can be purchased at the theater’s ticket booth or by calling (570)-996-1500. Reservations are recommended.

The Dietrich will also host several classes this November. On November 1st, Susi Nuss will be back to teach students how to create a mini market basket from 9:00 am - 6:00 pm. Class participants will work with black ash wood splints, spokes and weavers. Students can chose from several options for personalizing their baskets with weave technique, rim style, handle placement and embellishment detail.

Then on Thursday, November 6th from 6:00 - 9:00 pm, Esther Harmatz will be back with another Jewelry Making class. This time, students will learn metalworking. Participants will work with jeweler’s saws and cut, form and polish a metal pendant. Admission is $50 and all materials are provided. Last week, in Esther’s glass fusing workshop, students created beautiful glass fused pendants, which will be fired in a kiln, and then finished, polished and wire wrapped.

For kids, Amy and Steve Colley will teach All About Pottery classes at the Dietrich. In these four-week series, children will learn how to create hand thrown bowls on a potter’s wheel, and design whistles and birdhouses in this pottery class for all levels of experience. Students ages 5 -8 will meet on Fridays from 4:00 - 5:30pm. Children ages 9 - 12 will have class on Thursdays from 4:00 - 5:30 pm. For three to five year olds there will be Preschool and Mommy and Me classes available. Call the theater for more information about any of these classes or to sign up at 996-1500.

And this weekend, please remember to join us for a classical guitar concert featuring local instrumentalists Paul Sweeny and Jay Steveskey. This duo will play some of the most famous classical guitar music of all time. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at the door.

The theater will also be hosting a Writers’ Workshop with multi-published authors Marta Perry and Charlee Ganny this Saturday from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. Call the theater at 570-996-1500 for more information about these events.
