We have simply wonderful movies for you this week. Truly we do. First, of course, we still have Madagascar 2 , the delightful film about a bunch of crazy critters who suddenly find themselves in Africa fending for themselves. It’s funny and silly and full of jokes that delight the kids and lots of satire to put a smile on adult faces. It’s great escape, and heavens knows, if you spend too much time watching the stock market gyrate, then a few good solid laughs are called for!

For those who feel like a good story is in order, we have The Secret Life of Bees, starring, among others in a brilliant cast, the wonderful Queen Latifah. She is one of those actors who lights up a screen and it’s just fun to be in her company. Bees is a sweet, intelligent film that looks back to the sixties when a young girl, being raised by an abusive father, escapes to a farm where she learns the true meaning of family, plus lots of neat stuff about bees.

Just FYI – I tried again this week to get Fire Proof to no avail. Too few prints and I haven’t been lucky enough to snag one yet, but I’ll keep trying, I promise.

Got lots of calls for Quantum of Solace, and if I had four screens right now you can just bet I’d be playing it. But there was no room for it on two screens because I am playing Madagascar and will bring in Twilight on the 21st. It kills me not to be able to bring in a Bond film first-run, but that’s the way it is when you have two screens and films have to be kept for a number of weeks.

Here’s a heads up on what I believe we are going to book in for the upcoming months (and of course this all can change in a heartbeat if the movie companies decide not to give us one of these). Twilight is our next film, followed by Four Christmases, then on to The Tale of Desperaeux and then finally, on Christmas Day, Bedtime Stories with the great Adam Sandler. So, it’s a pretty good line-up for family viewing, although, again, I wish I had those new screens because I’d have a kiddie flick for Thanksgiving. But one makes do with what one can, and until Memorial Day, these hard choices have to be made.

A few thoughts about the upcoming holidays and the economy. These are hard times for many people. Hundreds of thousands of jobs are being lost. Businesses, large and small, are going under. There’s a world of hurt out there. So maybe this is a Christmas when we should think especially hard about how and where we are going to spend our money. And remember this – a small town is only as successful as the residents of that town decide it will be. It isn’t enough to tell local shopkeepers that they have a lovely store – you have to actually buy from them. It isn’t enough to tell local restaurateurs that

their dining facilities are terrific – you have to actually eat there.

When the Dietrich opened seven and a half years ago there were fifteen empty storefronts. Now there are none. But we’re only a bad fourth quarter away from shops being shuttered once again. So, keep it local, dear friends, as much as you possibly can.

Wouldn’t it be a grand year to perhaps cut back a bit on the elaborate gifts you give the children and go back to the way it was in my childhood where you got one special present and a few smaller ones and the most exciting thing was dinner and all being together and then playing one of the board games that we always found under the tree?

And then, at the end of the day, when everyone is full as a little tick and happy and stuffed with wonderful memories, how about a walk in the cold winter night to the Dietrich Theater where you can all enjoy a family film and rejoice in being together in the best theater in the best town in the world?

Just a thought.

See you at the Dietrich.

Are you ready to sing and dance? Well, get ready because Karl Williams will be at the Dietrich on Saturday, November 15th for a morning of children’s songs at 11:00 am. Williams has delighted young audiences with his easygoing and entertaining children’s songs from his two acclaimed CDs that have aired on radio and television. Some of his popular songs include “Big Fish Little Fish”, “Katie Did”, and “Uncle Robot”. We hope you and your little ones can join us for this free event.

Little ones are also invited to work with clay in Amy Colley’s All About Pottery classes for Mommy & Me and Preschoolers. They will create hand-thrown bowls on potter’s wheels, and design whistles and birdhouses in these pottery classes. It’s amazing what young hands can create. The preschool class will be held on Thursdays, November 13 to December 11 at noon - 12:45 pm and the Mommy and Me class will meet on Fridays, November 14 - December 12 at 10:30 - 11:15 am. Admission is $35 for each class series. Call the theater at 996-1500 for more information or to register.

Oh, and if you have started to think of Christmas gifts for the children in your life, the Dietrich offers gift certificates for classes including our Holiday Camp. This camp keeps kids’ hands and minds busy during Christmas vacation. From December 29 to December 31 at 9:30 - 11:00 am, young artists will become familiar with pottery, drawing and painting as they create their own masterpieces with our artist-in-residence Amy Colley. Admission is $35 and all materials are provided. Call the Dietrich at 996-1500 for details.

For adults, we have a new date for Esther’s Jewelry Making: Introduction to Metal Working class. Join her on Thursday, November 20th from 6:00 to 9:00 pm and learn the basics steps of metal jewelry fabrication. Last time she had this class they made beautiful metal pendants. I took Esther’s loom beading class a few weeks ago and learned so much. She gave me some great ideas for finishing beading projects. Admission to metalworking is $50 and includes materials. Call the theater to sign up.

Last weekend over 130 people came out to see Frances Slocum: Child of Two Americas. There is so much interest in her life. Bill Bachman, one of the film’s makers, asked the audience if there were any Slocum or Tripp descendants in the audience and there were! We hope to bring more local history events to the Dietrich.
