At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

Our hearts are broken at the Dietrich. If breaking hearts made a sound it would be gentle, soft, delicate, as if the finest crystal shattered and fell. There would be a ringing of far away bells on a cold, wintry night. Beating hearts belong to our bodies. Broken hearts belong to our spirits, our souls.

Early in the evening of November eighteenth, Randy Vieczorek, age twenty-nine, beloved husband and son and brother and friend passed from this earth. The last few years of his life had been spent in a battle literally to the death with one of the world’s true evils – drug addiction. Oh, he’d fought, and fought hard. Anyone who knew him will tell you that. Again and again he went into rehab and came out ready to face the devil head on, only to be pulled back by a force so much stronger than he was.

Randy’s battles are done, but the drug just keeps on killing. In case you think that a drug overdose only kills the addict, take a look at Sandy’s beautiful face. It is a mask of unadulterated pain. Look at his father, his best friend on earth, his protector, his buddy, his Dad. Ronnie weeps and weeps and when you think there could be no more tears he weeps some more. Look at his young wife. You’d think so much crying and the body would dehydrate and blow away, but it doesn’t. Tears are endless.

Here is a comfort: Sandy and Ronnie and Janice and young Ronnie and Heather all loved him with all their hearts. They never, ever turned him away. They never cast him aside. They were always there to help him if they could.

He will be cremated and his ashes divided. Heather will scatter half of them at the cabin above Mehoopany he was helping his father build. But his mother needs more than that. Sandy needs ashes buried at Sunnyside so she has a place, a marker, to go to fuss over him, to plant a flower, to pull weeds. His father needs a place to talk to him. To tell him he loves him and he misses him every day, every day.

For the rest of their lives there will be this terrible dividing line – before Randy died and after. For every holiday from this day forward, there will always be an empty chair.

We can’t believe it. Randy was one of the most loving young men who ever walked the earth. Even when his addiction had taken everything else, it didn’t take the gentleness, the kindness, the sweetness of his spirit. He loved his family unreservedly.

On the last morning of his life he brought breakfast for his mother and him. She knew he was having a hard day, so they just talked a little and ate. She was glad he was with her, safe for the moment.

“Bye, Mamma” he said, as he always did when he was leaving. He always called her “Mamma”. She had no premonition, no chill, no foreshadowing. But those would be the last words he would say to her on this earth. The pain hits like a raging inferno and turns the heart to dust.

But there is this. Maybe some of those ashes that Heather will scatter are going to nestle in on the land he loved and bask in the summer sun or huddle under the snow on a wintry day. And maybe the rest will be caught by a stray breeze, and twirl their way up and up, past the clouds and the moon and the sun to the farthest reaches of the universe. And there, in the quiet of the stars, Randy will hear his mother and father, his brother and sister, his wife and his grandparents, his aunts, his nieces and nephews, his in-laws and all the rest of his big, kindhearted, embracing family tell him how much they love him, for love truly is the only thing on the earth or in the heavens that is eternal.

Be at peace, Randy. You fought long and hard, and that’s all anyone can do. You were a good boy, a wonderful man. You rest easy, now. You are loved.

Polar Express!

Christmas with the Kranks

Live at The Dietrich

By

Now that Thanksgiving is here, it is blockbuster time at the Dietrich Theater. The family comedy “Christmas with the Kranks” which opens today, and the beloved children’s movie “Polar Express” are sure to get us all into the holiday spirit. Volunteers and staff have been busily decorating the Dietrich to outdo last December’s Christmas exhibit. So stop in for a great movies, breathtaking exhibits, delicious popcorn, and cultural events!

For cultural events, the theater will celebrate Christmas in Our Hometown with two live performances of “The Velveteen Rabbit” on Friday, December 10th at 5:00 and 7:00 pm. Mum Puppet Theater will perform this wordless puppet theater as each member of the audience becomes a partner in the telling of this well-loved classic. Admission is free.

Then on Saturday, December 11th at 10:30 to noon, the presenters of the “Velveteen Rabbit” will teach a “Build Your Own Puppet” workshop for kids ages 5 and up at the theater. Space is limited, so call the theater at 570-996-1500 to register. Admission is free.

The Dietrich’s Third Annual “Holiday Workshop” will also take place on Saturday, December 11th at 11:00 am – 12:30 pm. This is one of my favorite mornings at the theater. First, Bill Frye leads the group in holiday songs and stories, and then the kids and families go to different stations to decorate cookies, make holiday crafts, and see the amazing creations of the balloon lady. Admission is free.

For those adults and older kids out there, Maggie Cartwright will be teaching a “Wreath Decorating” Workshop at the theater on the same day from 11:00 am – 12:30 pm. Students will learn how to make ribbon bows. Wreaths and supplies will be provided. Admission is free however the wreaths and supplies range from $10 - $15. Please call 570-996-1500 to sign up.

To add a musical touch to that weekend, Lyric Consort will perform its second annual “Christmas Concert” on Sunday, December 12 at 8:00 pm at the theater. This a capella musical group was so well received last Christmas, we just had to bring them back again. They will perform sacred and secular Christmas music, jazz and folk music. Tickets are $10. Call Margie at 570-996-1500 to reserve your seats today.

Then on Thursday, December 16th at 2:00 and 7:00 pm the theater will have two showings of the classic holiday film “It’s a Wonderful Life”. This is Executive Director Hildy Morgan’s favorite day of the year! If you haven’t seen “It’s a Wonderful Life” on the big screen here is your chance! Admission is free, popcorn is free, and soda is free! This is the theater’s way to say thank you to our very supportive community.

Then after Christmas is over and while the kids are still home on holiday break, the Dietrich has a great activity for them – Holiday Camp. For three days your kids will be introduced to the artists Frida Kahlo, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Vincent Van Gogh by exploring a variety of mediums as they create their own masterpieces. This camp will be taught by Amy and Steve Colley on Monday through Wednesday, December 27, 28, 29 at 9:00 – 10:30 am for kids ages 6 – 8 and from 11:30 am – 1:00 pm for kids ages 9 –12. Admission is $30. This class would make a great holiday gift for those young artists on your shopping list. Class gift certificates are available at the Dietrich Theater office. Call 570-996-1500 for more information.

As you can see, the Dietrich is the place to be this December!
