At The Dietrich

Hildy Morgan

So, today I’m at home with the mother of all colds but still basking in the memory of a nearly perfect night. Of course I’m talking about Fall Film Festival gala night wherein Jeffrey outdid himself by bringing in Coco Before Chanel before LA and NY! And what a movie it is. My dear friend Bill Chapla found it too frivolous for his taste focused as it was on fashion. And normally a film about fashion wouldn’t do much for me, either. But this was about a woman who profoundly changed the way women were forced to dress by throwing out the corset and the feathers and the beads and the nonsense that was the early 20th century. She’s the one who made the clothes fit the body instead of the other way around, so it was very interesting.

The second film, In The Loop, is a hilariously funny British comedy about the start of a little war and the machinations that go on in London and Washington to get said war rolling along. Money and careers will be made in this gem of a wicked satire. It does have a lot of lewd language, but it’s so over the top that after awhile you simply forget it. Plus, the obscene language is nothing compared to the obscenity they are actually doing – falsifying documents so they can go to war! It’s high up on my recommendation list.

As is 500 Days of Summer – absolutely one of the most charming films I have ever, ever seen. Mark it down as a must-see during this festival. Seraphine is a tragic tale of art and mental illness but very interesting, and Summer Hours is very, very French as it weaves the story slowly, intricately of a family coming undone.
And while I’m talking about all these films, a tip of the hat to Esther and Bob Boyce and Bob Kulow for all the projection work they have done this week. Poor Esther didn’t even get to bed Friday night! What a great group!!!! (And thank you Ronnie Harvey and all our dear kids for their spectacular work Friday night!)
Sandy and I did go to see Jennifer’s body because I wanted to see if it deserved its’ R rating (it didn’t) and to see if Diablo Cody had lived up to her Juno reputation. (She did.) It’s very clever, funny, pays homage to Carrie and I wasn’t ever scared which says a lot about how much fun it pokes at horror films, because I never see them because I hate being scared!
This weekend we open Surrogates with Bruce Willis (one of my total favorites – I simply LOVE his Die Hard series) and this one looks like fun sci-fi.
Okay, before I go, I need to say thank you to a few folks – I was able to do that in person on gala night, but since that only encompasses a couple of hundred folks, this is a better way to say thanks to all the folks who made the expansion a success.
So, here goes the list, with the full knowledge that by thanking some I will have left out others and please believe me if I do that just give me a holler and I’ll include them next time.
First off there is the capital campaign committee and its fearless chairperson, Connie Kintner, who spent hours attempting to part folks from their money. Annette Sheldon and Gloria Fassett are fund-raisers extraordinaire. Without Frank Oliver there would most likely still be an old gas station on an empty lot.
In the office I have to start with our own Erica who not only did all her own work but kept every bit of paperwork for the expansion straight. She was the go-to person for literally everything! Bravo, lovely young woman! Bravo!
Thank you to our Barb Jones who kept the money straight and put in many, many long hours – and she’s a volunteer, no less! Shirley Fisher who we gave the nearly impossible task of raising money for memberships etc. etc. right in the middle of a capital campaign.
And, finally, thank you to our former President Jodi Armstrong who did the major grant writing and who presented our case before the boro and the zoning commission. She did a superb job, one that was invaluable, and we will always be in her debt! A million thank-yous!
See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

by
Erica Rogler

Not only is the Dietrich busy with it’s seventh annual fall film festival, but the theater is full of activity from quilting to pottery to yoga to children’s classes. In artist-in-residence Steve Colley’s Open Studio for Painting, Drawing, & Pottery, students have flocked from all over the area to work at their own pace and with the medium of their choice in this workshop. This class is all about self-expression and improvement in the arts without the structure of a formal art class. Steve’s students have come as far as Bear Creek, Berwick, and Tamaqua to participate in Open Studio. It is great to see participation in Dietrich art classes continue to grow.

In Quilting for Kids, seven students ages 6 and up are learning the art of hand-quilting as they design Signature Quilts with instructors Peggy Lane, Terry Keller, and Ingrid Rogler. Students have picked out Civil War period reproduction fabrics to use as they start creating their own classic Civil War friendship quilts. Towards the end of the class, students will ask their friends and family members to sign their quilted masterpieces.

Speaking of quilting, don’t forget to join us on Saturday, October 3as Tunkhannock celebrates Airing of the Quilts. The theater’s Earnshaw Gallery will be decked out in quilts created by local quilt maker Dixie McGregor of Lemon, PA. Her gorgeous quilts are tradition in style and she prefers designing quilts with a mix of piecing and appliqué.

In addition to the exhibit, on 11 am that day, quilt lecturer Edyta Sitar will give a presentation at the theater that will take the audience through historical, political, and personal events that have inspired generations of quilters. She will reflect on quilters’ work and how they find inspiration to create, to express, and to mark milestones in their lives. She will share a large collection of over 50 quilts that will entertain and inspire. Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased by calling 570-996-1500 or at the Dietrich Theater ticket booth while supplies last. After the lecture, Dixie McGregor will be in the Dietrich’s Gallery to answer your questions about the exhibit and to demonstrate hand-quilting.

Moving from quilts to music, the following day, Sunday, October 4 at 3 pm, the Dietrich will present La Voce’s performance “Riches to Rags”. We invite you to come out and experience an afternoon of music from the Grand Opera and Sacred Repertoire, highlights from “The Student Prince”, other Romberg “Gems”, and fun selections from Broadway. La Voce is directed by Dolores Dominick Noll. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased by calling 570-996-1500.

The following weekend, the Dietrich will host a special event for children and families. On Saturday, October 10 at 1:00 pm, the Gamut Theatre Group of Harrisburg will take the Dietrich stage to perform the children’s tale “Little Red Riding Hood”. During this performance, help Little Red stay on the right path and watch out for the Big Bad Wolf. This classic will keep you laughing all the way to Grandma’s house. Tickets are $5 each and can be purchased at the ticket booth or by calling the theater at 570-996-1500.
