At The Dietrich

What a weekend! Starting with gala night – just a super evening! The food was particularly delicious from Epicurian, Seasons and Twigs. I had my first taste of rare fresh tuna - - I’d never tried it before - - and it was really good! And all the other mini wonders from our trio of tremendous caterers, from Epicurian’s little Chinese Restaurant style boxes of tofu and noodles, Seasons outrageous Kobi beef sliders and Twigs aforementioned sushi grade tuna, it was all simply spectacular. And that doesn’t even begin to touch upon Epicurian’s usual cruise ship spread of spectacular desserts! And of course it all goes down so smoothly when accompanied by a glass of Nimble Hill wine!

One lovely surprise Friday was that Karen Harvey came back for festival weekend. She looked wonderful and it was sooo good to see her again and catch up over dinner on Saturday night! She was so important in those early days of renovating the theater. Without her it wouldn’t have gotten done. She just kept handing us daily lists of things to do, and then when we’d finish that list she’d give us another. That went on for four or five weeks and then, voila!, suddenly our work was complete and we were ready to open.
So it is always good to see Karen and talk about those early days when it was actually possible to get a list accomplished. Sigh.
Now, here are a few movies that you must, must, must see! First of all, Mao’s Last Dancer is even better than I thought it would be! When it came to an end Friday night the audience applauded with great gusto! It’s just so gorgeous. The dancing is enough to take your breath away and the story is completely interesting and inspiring. You’ll love it…trust me!
And Get Low is so funny and sad and beautifully acted, it’s just a national treasure. Robert Duval is his usual wonderful old self and Bill Murray is very funny as the almost-but-not-quite-sleazy funeral parlor owner who wants to part Duval from his money. Sissy Spacek gives a lovely performance as the woman who loves Duval and Lucas Black plays the young man who works for Murray. I was so happy to see Black because I absolutely loved him as the child star of Sling Blade, probably the best Billy Bob Thornton film ever made.
The Kids Are All Right is even better than I thought it would be. It’s just such a good story about a typical family where the marriage has grown a little stale, where the breadwinner has too much to say and the stay-at-home Mom has a loss of self esteem as the years go by and she has little of her own. The fact that it’s two Moms instead of a Mom and a Dad changes nothing but does give another reason for gays and lesbians to be able to marry. Should a union like that portrayed in Kids fall apart, the stay-at-home Mom has no legal rights to anything. No property rights, no alimony, no custody rights to her non-biological child. It gives much to think about. But besides all that, it’s funny and poignant and smart and just a really good movie!
And Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work is aptly named. She is most certainly a piece of work. If raunch bothers you, this isn’t a movie for you. I came away from it full of admiration for this brave dame. She’s like one of those punching dolls where you hit it and it goes down and then it pops right up again. She’s crazy brave, just keeps plugging along no matter what happens. But she has a dirty mouth, makes fun of everything and everybody and doesn’t give a darn what anyone thinks. So if potty mouth offends you, skip this one.
I hope by next week I’ll have at least seven or eight more to tell you about. In the meantime, come to the best movies of the past six months. Really, they’re all so much better than normal movie fare.
Oh, and a special thanks to Lori and Jerry Bogedin for their generous gift to the theater! Thanks so much, dear friends!
     See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

by
Erica Rogler

In just a few days downtown Tunkhannock will be draped in the most colorful quilts as we celebrate the town’s annual Airing of the Quilts.  It is great to get out there and walk the streets while looking at such gorgeous handiwork.  There will be all kinds of quilts displayed from traditional designs, to crazy quilts, to more contemporary patterns. Plus, I think it is always exciting to view these quilts in the great outdoors especially with the backdrop of our region’s beautiful fall foliage.  We will be taking part in the day’s festivities by presenting a quilt exhibit and lecture.  Starting today through November 12, the Dietrich’s Earnshaw Gallery will be adorned with quilt works by Tunkhannock quiltmaker Betty Ball. Betty has quilted for the past twenty-five years and has created numerous quilts.  She is know for her fine appliqué and has won many awards at local quilt shows.  She even received an award for the Best Overall Quilt Block at the Pennsylvania Farm Show.  Having viewed several of her quilts, I can tell you this is an exhibit you won’t want to miss.  According to Betty, she only creates quilts that she would want to live with.  This exhibit will be open for the public to view during scheduled movie times, by appointment, and during Airing of the Quilts.

For our presentation component of Airing of the Quilts, fabric designer Gail Kessler will be at the Dietrich on Saturday, October 2 at 11:00 a.m.   During Kessler’s lecture From Concept to Cloth, she will share with us how she takes an idea for a fabric from a thought to a reality.  Gail is a designer and marketing director for Andover Fabrics, as well as the owner of Ladyfinger Sewing Studio, a retail quilt fabric shop located in Oley, Pennsylvania.  Tickets to the show are $7 each and can be purchased by calling the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 or at the theater’s ticket booth while supplies last.

The following weekend, we will host another special event at the Dietrich.  The theater will be filled with music on Sunday, October 10th at 3:00 p.m. with a classical guitar concert A Tribute to Segovia.  Local classical guitarist Jay Steveskey will pay tribute to the great Spanish master, Andres Segovia, by performing some of the most beloved solo guitar masterpieces from the “Segovian” repertoire.  Andres Segovia (1893-1987) is considered to be the father of the modern classical guitar renaissance.  He dedicated his lie to elevating the guitar and it’s music to the concert stage.  Known as one of the last of the Romantic style of players, he demonstrated the guitar’s expressive and technical potential.  According to Segovia, “The guitar is a small orchestra.  It is polyphonic.  Every string is a different color a different voice”.  So come join us and experience a taste of this magical not too distant era of Spanish Romanticism.  Tickets to the concert are $10 each and can be purchased at the door or reserved in advance by calling us at 570-996-1500.

For those of you who would like to experience the beauty of the great outdoors, we have a few spaces remaining on our Fall Foliage to the Finger Lakes Bus Trip.  Join us on Wednesday, October 13 on an adventure in the Finger Lakes region.  First we will traverse the Cornell Campus in Ithaca and visit the Johnson Museum of Art and the McGraw Chimes Tower, which is a mile of moderate walking.  After a sumptuous Tuscan buffet at the Banfi Restaurant in the Statler Hotel, we will walk to the base of Taughannock Falls, then drive to the rim to view the entire canyon from afar.  It should be an amazing trip full of scenic views.  The trip will be guided by naturalist Jane Frye who did a terrific job guiding us on our Watkins Glen trip last spring.  The bus will leave the Dietrich at 8:00 a.m. and then return about 6:00 p.m.  Admission is $100 per person including lunch.  You can sign up by calling us at 570-996-1500.

And don’t forget to check out all of the Dietrich’s classes for children and adults coming up this month.  We will be offering French, jewelry making, pottery, knitting, basketry and so much more.  Visit our website www.dietrichtheater.com <http://www.dietrichtheater.com> for all of the offerings.
