At The Dietrich

So. We have some totally terrific movies coming your way in the next two weeks. For those who love a fine film, we are bringing you “Finding Neverland”, the Johnny Depp tour de force about J.M. Barrie and the writing of “Peter Pan”. Although it is inspired by Barrie and the brilliant work he penned, it is a fictional account of those magical times. The movie has bragging rights to three of the most talented actors in Hollywood – Johnny Depp, Kate Winslet and Dustin Hoffman. It’s hard to think that there could be more appealing or gifted actors, and it is a fact that those three hardly ever make a bad film. This is a critically acclaimed film, beautifully acted and directed. Worth your time. Come give it a try.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have “Oceans Twelve”, the sequal to George Clooney’s blockbuster, “Ocean’s Eleven”. This is pure, unadulterated, lighthearted, silly, good fun!And if you want to talk about terrific actors – well, this one beats ‘em all. Here’s the cast list: Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, Brad Pitt, Bernie Mac, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Now, is that most of Hollywood’s beautiful people? Even the critics who didn’t much care for it had to admit that it was good fun. The plot is thin, but that doesn’t really matter, does it? Ocean’s gang have to return the money they stole in Ocean’s Eleven. So if you’re in the mood for a chuckle or two and would like to look at gorgeous people doing silly things, come on down. Your popcorn’s waiting.

Then just a quick heads up for next week. We are bringing in the Golden Globe winner for the year’s best comedy – “Sideways”. Mark it on your calendar. This is one of those rare art films that has crossed over into the mainstream big-time! We’re thrilled that we could get it so soon and we hope you will come to view and enjoy.

Oh yeah. Maureen wanted me to ask those of you who bought gift bags to call her if you got one of the six month passes. We know they are in two of the bags, but we haven’t a clue who got them. We just want to say “congrats and good show” etc. So let us know who you are, you cagey devils. (Heh. Heh.)

So, I saw Dr. Barsigian for the final time last week. He was so kind and sweet. Said it was kind of silly for me to come all the way to Dunmore to see him and I had to agree that it was. So in four months when I have to see an oncologist again, I will go back to Tyler. That’s good. I felt like a fish out of water visiting the big city. I’ll be happy to see my friends in the chemo unit again, although very happy that chemo is done.

That’s right. At last! I’m done with chemo!!!! To quote the Grateful Dead, “what a long, strange trip it’s been”. I’m glad, now that it’s over, that I did it, because I think it brings with it some peace of mind. It’s pretty rough stuff, but I wouldn’t want anyone reading this to think that it’s too tough to do, because it isn’t. I’m a great big medical baby. So if I can do it, anyone can. But it wasn’t such a good time and I’m glad it’s behind me.

And I have to say, that I was helped immeasurably by all the compassionate and wonderful people who reached out to me to share their stories. I desperately wanted to hear about people who had survived past a week or two. I longed to hear about the two and four and ten year survivors. This cancer business is scary. It’s insidious. It waits to nail you in the middle of the night with bad dreams and uncontrollable thoughts. But then, when that would happen, I’d go to my dresser and take the basket holding the literally hundreds of cards sent to me and I’d read the notes and I’d think – how can I be so scared when I have all these wonderful people praying for me. And I’d put the cards away, settle back into bed with a Jack Russell on either side and sleep peacefully once again. Thank you, dear friends. I’m a lucky duck!

See you at the Dietrich!

Live at The Dietrich

Maxwell Koki Donkor, Master African Drummer, did it again! The Dietrich had a great turn out for its Drumming Workshop on January 13th. The event was truly intergenerational. The drumming circle was full of life and rhythm as students learned the art and culture of African Drumming. If you missed him this time around, we will work on bringing him back next year.

Now, let me tell you about an art experience the Dietrich has to offer you! The theater currently has two artists in residents, Amy and Steve Colley. Amy and Steve Colley both have their Bachelors of Fine Arts from Swain School of Design in Massachusetts and their Masters in Fine Arts from the Parson School of Design in New York City. Steve has taught as an adjunct professor of art at Keystone College, the University of Scranton, and Marywood University. Their artwork has been exhibited throughout the states and is represented in numerous private collections. In 2000, the Colleys’ founded Colley Tile Works. Amy and Steven create custom tiles for decorative use in kitchens, bathrooms, and more.

Now the Colleys’ offer classes at the Dietrich. They teach something for everyone in the field of fine arts. For the little ones, we have a booming “Mommy and Me Mixed Media” class for three and four year old and “Preschool Art” for those tots who are ready to explore art on their own. Then in “Mixed Media” classes, Amy and Steve introduce a new artist every week. Students learn about famous artists in Impressionism, Abstract Expressionism, Cubism and more as they create works of art in the mediums of clay, tempera, pastels, and charcoal. Children ages 5 – 8 meet for “Mixed Media” on Mondays and students ages 9- 12 meet on Fridays. For adults, the Colley’s teach “Pottery and Sculpture”, “Portfolio Prep” and “Intergenerational Pottery”. Pottery is quite a hit at the Dietrich. Students can use the potter wheels to create beautiful bowls and other works of art. The adult classes are very individualized. Steve will work with students of all levels of experience and helps them achieve their artistic goals. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 to find out more.

By now most of you must have heard about “Wyoming County Reads: One County, One Book, One Movie” featuring the classic novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. There is a quite a buzz around town. Students at the Tunkhannock High School are participating in the project. Free books are still available at public libraries in Wyoming County. Book discussions will start on Wednesday, February 2nd, 7:00 pm at the Tunkhannock Public Library. Other discussions will be held throughout the month at the Tunkhannock Library and the Dietrich, and will culminate on February 24th, at the Dietrich with two free showings of “To Kill a Mockingbird” on the big screen. Discussions, refreshment, and the movie have been made possible by a grant from the Pennsylvania Humanities Council. Call the Dietrich (996-1500) or the Tunkhannock Public Library (836-1677) for details.

Then on Tuesday, February 15th at 7:00 pm, the Dietrich Theater will host an event called “War in Letters” at 7:00 pm presented by Mary Beth Voda. During this evening, you will be able to catch glimpses of World War II through the correspondence of a U.S. Marine and a Japanese General. Come out and observe the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima. Admission is $5.00. Veterans’ admission is free and students’ admission is $3.00. Call the Dietrich for details.
