At The Dietrich

We have an absolutely superb movie for you this week! “Sideways” will be showing in the Evans starting Friday. I am so thrilled! I thought we might have to wait until festival to show it, but our Jeffrey was able to get it for us considerably sooner than that! This is an adult film with an adult “R” rating. We are going to be strict about that and we will card teens. No one under eighteen will be admitted without a parent or other accompanying adult. Frankly, I don’t think most young folks would like it very much anyway. The story is about two middle-aged men whose lives have failed to live up to their youthful expectations. Disappointed in life, they take a week long trip through the California wine country before one of the men is to be married. On their journey they learn about wine, women and themselves in a poignant and ofttimes hilarious trip. I have not seen it yet, but people who have have told me that it is simply wonderful. They laughed and were interested and just had a great time. It’s an indie film that crossed-over big time. The director is the fellow who directed “About Schmidt” which I thought was very funny. I think this one is supposed to be even more amusing. Do come give it a try. If you love indie films, this one won’t disappoint, I promise you.

In the Murray we will be holding “Finding Neverland” for one more week. Neverland is a totally charming film, with an outstanding performance by Johnny Depp. It’s worth your while and is very upbeat in case you’re feeling a little beaten down by our January weather. It will surely be nominated for an Oscar for best in screenplay, actor and maybe even actress and director. Give it a try. It will be a great weekend for a double-feature!

So, guess what? I think – I don’t know for sure yet – but I think that on Valentine’s Day we’re going to be able to show you “Singin’ In The Rain” with Gene Kelley, Donald O’Connor and Debbie Reynolds. There are some who think it’s the greatest musical ever made. I tried to get “Top Hat” with Astaire and Rogers, but couldn’t. That doesn’t come plattered and we don’t have reel-to-reel equipment. Someday, when we’re really, really rich (yeah, like that will be the day) we’re going to invest a couple of grand and get the machinery that will allow us to show some of the oldie and goodie films from the thirties and forties. Won’t that be so much fun? So next week I’ll let you know, but it’s looking like it may be a go. I hope so! What a great Valentine’s Day date! Watching Gene Kelley dancing down that rainy street! Does it get better than that?

There’s been a little change in the discussion of “To Kill A Mockingbird”. Joining Professor Bareiss will be Arthur Breese Director of the Northeastern PA Diversity Education Consortium and Associate Director of the Diversity Institute at College Misericordia. Wow! Is that a mouthful or what? It should make the discussion especially interesting, don’t you think?

If you still don’t have your book from the library, they have twenty-five more copies just sent in. So altogether there will be over two hundred people taking part in the reading. Isn’t that just something, though? It’s such a neat thing, that so many in the county would decide they’d like to take part in a group reading. Just makes you proud to be part of such a cool area. And so literary, too!

So, that’s all the news from the theater this week. Stay warm, dear readers. It’s a cold, cold world we’re living in right now.

But remember, it’s cozy at the movies. And the popcorn is always fresh and warm.

See you at the Dietrich!

Live at The Dietrich

While the cold winds blow outside, the Dietrich Theater is heating up with great classes and events. Classes are starting to fill for February. “Mommy and Me Mixed Media” is super popular for tikes. We have moms, grandmothers, and grandfathers along for these mornings of fun art. Pottery and Sculpture continues to grow. The bowls, vases, and sculptures that are created in that class are amazing. And those faithful yoga students come out to stretch and relax every Wednesday morning.

Starting in February, Eileen Balboa will be back with her afternoon “Decorative Painting” class. In each three-hour session, students are able to fully complete a decorative painting project whether they are a novice or advanced. These projects make great gifts or decorations for your home. Classes are on Wednesdays from noon to 3:00 pm starting on February 2. Please call ahead to register at 570-996-1500 so Eileen has enough materials for the class. Admission is $15 per session plus the cost of the painting surface. And for those of you who are interested in night “Decorative Painting” classes, Eileen is offering classes on Thursdays, February 24 and March 3 from 6:30 – 9:30 pm. Admission is the same as the day classes. Again, we just need you to call ahead so Eileen can bring the correct amount of supplies.

Everything is falling into place for our “Wyoming County Reads: One County, One Book, One Movie” program. It has been a delight to work with Susan Turrell and the Tunkhannock Public Library. Now, I have to ask you “Got Your Book?”, because a whole line up of events are ready to get kicked off in just a couple days. Everyone is welcome to attend the discussion series bases on the novel To Kill a Mockingbird led by Dr. Warren Bareiss, Lecturer at the Department of Communication, Wilkes University. On Wednesday, February 2 at 7:00 pm at the Tunkhannock Public Library, we’ll start off the series with “The Power of Storytelling. On Wednesday, February 9 from 1:30 – 2:30 pm there will be a book chat about “Growing Up in Small Town, U.S.A. at the Tunkhannock Public Library. Then on Thursday, February 17th at 7:00 pm at the Dietrich Theater, Warren will facilitate a discussion on “Parenting in America”. On Wednesday, Febraury 23rd at 7:00 pm, “Justice, Race, and Class in America” will be discussed. So read the book, participate in fun and engaging chats, and make a few friends in the process. The series will culminate in two screenings of the film at the Dietrich Theater on February 24. All of these events are free and refreshments will be provided. Give the theater or the library a call for details.

The Dietrich is also preparing for “A War in Letters” on Tuesday, February 15th at 7:00 pm at the theater. Help us commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima as Marybeth Voda, shares the correspondence of a U.S. Marine, Marybeth’s father, and the correspondence of a Japanese general who fought there as well. Tickets are $5.00. The student rate is $3.00. Veterans’ admission is free. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1509.

A fun event for kids this February is “Yoga for Kids” with certified yoga instructor Melissa Russo. All ages are welcome to attend this yoga class on Saturday, February 12th from 11:00 am – noon. Admission is free. Please bring a beach towel or yoga mat. Call the theater for details.

So beat those winter blahs, try something new at the Dietrich this February!
