Through an audio- and video-oriented discussion, Beatles scholar Kenneth Womack brings the story of the Beatles vividly to life.  Womack traces the group's creative arc from their salad days in Liverpool to the mean streets of Hamburg, through Abbey Road, and to the twilight of their career.  In an effort to communicate the power of the Beatles' remarkable achievement, audiences investigate the origins of the group's compositions, as well as the songwriting and recording practices that brought them to fruition.  Through a carefully choreographed multimedia presentation, Womack reveals the ways in which the Beatles gave life to a musical synthesis that would change the world.

At The Dietrich

Well, my oh my! What a week it’s been! It wasn’t too hard to imagine
that a rain-drenched hurricane could give us a one-two punch, but I don’t
think we got how troublesome Irene was going to be. We were lucky in South
Auburn. We lost power for about thirty-six hours and our phone is still
not working. Although we got the internet back last night. Go figure.
However, much as I hated being without power (I’m not one to love being in
the dark with no telly and no hot shower) it was so minor compared to some
of the awful stuff others have had to endure. I have to say – the linemen,
the guys who come to repair the damage with phone or electrical, they are a
heroic bunch! The fact that they get service restored as quickly as they do
to so many homes is just amazing to me. When I hear people complain about
their service not being restored fast enough I wonder if they have thought
through how hard these fellas work and in what perfectly awful conditions!
So, give the repair crews a break and tell them how grateful you are for
what they do for us. Bless their hearts!
Movies, movies, movies! It’s September so the pickins are slim, but we
will try to play catch-up with a few movies that you missed, and still try
to bring in new ones you might enjoy. So, in that spirit, this week we
continue showing The Help (if you haven’t seen it yet you really owe
yourself a trip to the Dietrich to catch one of the best films in years) and
we have another week of the neat little horror film, Don’t Be Afraid of the
Dark. It’s really, really scary. Shiver.
Then, as filler, we have Captain America – one of the first comics to
take on the Nazi war machine. This is a classy little superhero movie about
a patriotic guy who stands up against one of the most evil forces of our
times. It got terrific reviews (unlike so many of the summer blockbusters)
and is generally a fun time.
Finally, we have Change-up, starring Ryan Reynolds and Jason Batemen.
It’s one of those "Oops, I magically took on your identity and now I have
problems even though I really really thought you had a better life than I
did" movies and looks to be entertaining, especially since the stars are
very pleasing.
On September 9th we will have Contagion, a fun apocalyptic film about
a germ that wages war on mankind. Looks to be fun if you like those kinds
of films (I love ‘em, although they would have to go far to beat Stephen
King’s The Stand or Day After Tomorrow, two of my very favorite
end-of-life-as-we-know-it movies!). Then, second run we will bring you
(probably) One Day, the Ann Hathaway romance and Conan, starring the hunky
guy from Game Of Thrones. Unless we can get Warrior, which we keep begging
for and have so far been rejected out of hand. And finally, on September 16th we start festival (don’t forget those tix for gala night – only $35.00 this year and such fun foods! – 996-1500 for your reservations) and then on
the 23rd we have festival continue and Moneyball and Dolphin Tale, followed
by Dream House on the 30th. So, good stuff coming up, plus all those
absolutely wonderful Fall Festival films! (Go to the website to peruse them
at your leisure.)
So, I had my three month check-up with my gorgeous oncologist, Dr.
Ronjon and got to say hi to Laurie and Janice and Diane and it was almost
fun. I say almost, because a trip to the oncologist doesn’t exactly hit the
top of anyone’s "fun" list. But she gave me a clean bill of health and a
return visit in six months instead of three. So, that’s totally cool!
Remember, ladies, don’t put off those mammograms! If you haven’t gotten
yours, make that call today. Look – this time my cancer was caught so
early and was so small (pre-stage one) that I didn’t need chemo! That’s
what you want to shoot for. Early detection! Don’t let fear stop you from
making that call. The earlier they catch it (and usually there is nothing
to catch) the less you have to do to get rid of it! Hold that thought as
you dial that number.
See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

Erica Rogler

Live at the Dietrich September 7, 2011

I can’t believe September is already here! Time just goes by so quickly. This month the Dietrich truly has something for everyone. For little ones, the Dietrich Children’s Theater will be back with live performances on Friday, September 9 at 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and Saturday, September 10 at 11:00 a.m. They will be presenting "Lon Po Po: A Little Red Riding Hood Story from China". In this story, three small children out in the Chinese countryside bid farewell to their father as he travels overnight to visit their sick grandmother, or "po po." The children are cautioned not to open the door to anyone, as there might be a wolf, or "lon" lurking about. But when there is a knock on the door late at night, is it their po po - or is it really an evil lon po po instead? I think kids will have a fun time finding similarities and differences between the Red Riding Hood Story they are familiar with and this one. The show is very interactive and audience members will learn a few Chinese words from the production. Admission is free and tickets will be available at the door or by calling 570-996-1500. After the show, storyteller Fiona Powell and the cast will take the audiences questions about the play. We would like to thank the Pennsylvania Humanities Council for sponsoring the production. All ages are welcome to attend.

The next big event at the Dietrich is on Wednesday, September 14 at 7:00 p.m. Beatles scholar Kenneth Womack will give a multi-media presentation that brings the story of the Beatles to life. He will trace the band’s creative arc from their days in Liverpool to the mean streets of Hamburg, through Abbey Road and to the twilight of their career. Womack will also help us explore the origins of the group’s compositions as well as the songwriting and recording practices that brought them to fruition. Admission is free. This program is also sponsored by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council. Call 570-996-1500 for reservations.

Two days after the Beatles presentation the Dietrich will kick off its Fall 2011 Film Festival with an Oktoberfest themed gala on Friday, September 16. We encourage you to gather up your friends and enjoy an evening of food, film, beer, wine, desserts and good fun. That evening we will show "Beginners" and Woody Allen’s "Midnight in Paris". Food will be provided by Epicurean Delight, Seasons Restaurant, Twigs Restaurant and the Fireplace Restaurant. Nimble Hill Brewing Company will preview its new beer at the gala and there will be other microbrews available as well. Wine will be provided by Nimble Hill Vineyard & Winery. Tickets are $35. Talk about a great deal!! Call 570-996-1500 to make your reservations. For movie summaries and show times for all film festival films visit www.dietrichtheater.com or request a brochure in the mail by calling us at 570-996-1500. Join us in celebrating 16 of the finest foreign, independent and art films in 14 days.

And just a reminder…Fall classes at the Dietrich are almost ready to begin. Please visit www.dietrichtheater.com for a complete listing of slated for children and adults that are slated from September through December.
