At The Dietrich by All I can say is --- "Thank you, Vampires…bless your stone-cold hearts
and you are welcome at the Dietrich any time you have a yearning to fly on
in!" What a weekend! Thursday night midnight sold out! Friday night
early and late show…sold out! Saturday night, virtual sell-out and good
crowds at all the other showings! It was phenomenal! And thank you, ladies
and gents who came to see it, for understanding that it’s the popcorn and
soda that keep us going. Thank you, dear, dear customers, for your loyalty
to the Dietrich and for your generosity. You gave us the biggest weekend
ever!!!!! Honest. Ever! Ooooh, it’s so exiting!
So, Happy Feet didn’t do so well nationwide and therefore here, too. I
was surprised. I thought it would do very well, but I think that the
Twilight movie sort of sucked all the oxygen out of the air, making it very
difficult for any other movie to co-exist, but also, audiences just sort of
greeted it with a yawn. Who knows what makes a movie a hit? Sometimes it’s
very hard to figure out. It still had respectable audiences, however, and
we expect that to continue over the Thanksgiving holiday, although it will
be hard for it to regain lost ground once The Muppets come out and Arthur
Christmas (both of which, by the way, got an unheard of 100% at rotten
tomatoes.com).
So, if you haven’t been in the theater this weekend (and we know most
of you were), but still, there’s probably about 26,000 in the county who
weren’t, then you must make a special trip to see Stephen’s Christmas case.
It is so wildly clever, so brimming with imagination, so absolutely
breathtaking that I stood before it and actually couldn’t say a word. (And
we know that hardly ever happens.) It’s about a wee elf who opens the trap
door to the clock tower and suddenly the tower is full of mischievous
monkeys creating complete havoc with the great clock face and Santa’s
reindeer in the background. It’s so wonderful that I can’t really describe
it – you absolutely have to come see it. And there are little buttons for
the kids to push so it’s interactive, and that’s only a small part of its’
charm. You know, Stephen is still the set designer for The Good Wife on CBS
on Sunday evenings at 9:00, so you know he’s pretty darn good at what he
does, but this is so delightfully whimsical that I think he has actually
outdone himself. So, thank you Stephen – thank you a million times. You
are so kind to share you incredible talent with the Dietrich. You’re just
amazing!
Another "thank you" is in order – for Citrus Energy who sent us a
donation to help us recover from the flood damage. I know, thanks to our
splendid volunteers, the theater looks as if the nasty waters never even
touched us, but they did, and we struggle every day with the aftermath of
such losses. But thanks to Citrus Energy we are able to carpet the Evans
and the Murray! It will be so nice to have the floors carpeted again! Thank
you, Citrus! We appreciate your help more than you know.
Another successful story of feral kittens going to loving homes. Carol
G. got a home for a baby tiger kitty and Jen Jenkins took a little orange
and a baby black kitty and they have assimilated beautifully and are
complete pets now. It doesn’t take long, really. And so many need homes.
But I’m going to pitch again for the guy we call "friendly" in the colony,
and ask if anyone out there might find it in their hearts to give him a
chance. He’s neutered, friendly and gorgeous! He will make a lovely pet,
although as with any ferals he will probably need a week or two to get
comfortable. Actually, we don’t think he is a true feral – we think he was
a house cat who was dropped off to fend for himself. But what a
Thanksgiving it would be for him to find a forever home. Just a thought.
See you at the Dietrich.

I can’t wait for the ice sculptures, horse drawn wagon rides and all of the fun and festivity associated with this two-day event on Friday, December 2 and Saturday, December 3. The Dietrich will celebrate in grand fashion as well. On both Friday and Saturday nights we will show Emmet Otter’s Jugband Christmas at 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Created by Jim Henson, this favorite Christmas movie is about a poor otter family who risks everything for a chance to win the cash prize of a talent contest for Christmas. This movie is presented in-part by the Jim Henson Legacy Foundation and sponsored by Cabot Oil and Gas Corporation. Admission is free.
On Saturday of Christmas in Our Hometown, the Dietrich will present its annual Holiday Workshop. All ages are invited to come out from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for cookie decorating, ornament making, singing with Bill Frye and balloon creations by Silly Sally. Admission is free and is bound to put you in the holiday spirit. Cabot Oil and Gas has also sponsored this event.
In addition to free activities during Christmas in Our Hometown, we will be hosting a Homemade Cookie Walk to Benefit the Dietrich Theater. For $5 you will be able to fill a container of various Christmas cookies that you select. Sounds delicious, right?
While you are at the Dietrich you will have to visit our spectacular Christmas displays from Amy Colley’s antique dollhouse to Patrick Robinson’s antique toys to Stephen Hendrickson’s incredible scene "On Christmas Eve, who let the monkeys in?". I am amazed by all of the creativity and energy that went into those showcases. What a gift to the community!
The Dietrich will be filled with activity the week after Christmas in our Hometown too. On Wednesday, December 7 the Dietrich Radio Players under the direction of Valerie Paulus will be back with a performance of "The Bishops Wife". This Luxe Radio Theater play is about a bishop who asks for divine help in building a new cathedral. His prayer is answered by an unconventional angel named Dudley, who proceeds to work in ways other than helping build the cathedral. You’ll have to come to the show to find out what happens. According to the Dietrich’s own Esther Harmatz who is in the production, "This classic comedy that is themed around Christmas is sure to get you into the holiday spirit." Not only will there be live sound effects to enhance the show, but a barbershop quartet from the Endless Mountains Chorus will delight us with music that evening. Admission to the show is free. Please call us at 570-996-1500 to reserve a seat.
Then on Friday, December 9th at 10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and Saturday, December 10th at 11 a.m. the Dietrich Children’s Theatre will take the Dietrich stage for their production of "Lon Po Po: A Red Riding Hood Story from China". During this show we will visit the Chinese countryside where three small children bid farewell to their father as he travels overnight to visit their sick grandmother, or "po po." The children are cautioned not to open the door to anyone, as there might be a wolf, or "lon" lurking about. But when there is a knock on the door late at night, is it their po po - or is it really an evil lon po po instead? Tickets are free to this production as well and can be picked up at the Dietrich Theater ticket booth or reserved over the phone by calling 570-996-1500. The Pennsylvania Humanities Council has sponsored this show.
