Please join us for a special production as we bring two local legends to  the Dietrich stage to celebrate the lifetime of friendship between Melissa Gardner (Hildy Morgan) and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III (David Zarko).  This beautifully simple play, where two actors sit at a table reading their letters, is at turns comic, maddening, despairing and endearing as we follow the journey through the life they shared and the connection they never lost.

Okay. So, how do you like this? This week we will be playing three
(yup, three) Academy Award nominees for best picture! How’s that for
cool????
Of course, we have War Horse, which is playing for one more week and
which, because of it’s grand scenes, it’s challenging portrayal of the
cruelties war inflicts on man and beast and the incredible scope of the
story (plus breathtaking cinematography) puts it at the top of the Best
Picture category. It’s not a film I can see, because animal sadness is
unbearable to me, and anytime I have ever seen something cruel happen to an
animal whether it’s on the screen or in real life, I can’t get those images
out of my mind. They haunt me forever, and a story about a beautiful,
intelligent being caught up in one of man’s totally stupid wars would be
more than I could bear. Still, my friends who have seen it (because their
psyches are a tad more normal than mine) have said it is superb. Just
passing that on.
The most nominations (eleven in all) for Best Flick went to Hugo,
Martin Scorcese’s masterpiece set in the 1930’s about a young orphan boy
who lives in a train station and is caught up in a mystery involving his
dead father and an automaton. This is one of the few special effects movies
that needs the 3D and it becomes an integral part of the film. It’s a
glorious movie – sort of reminds you why you like film in the first place.
And, as usual at the Dietrich, there will be no extra charge for the 3D.
(We really think Hollywood can go suck eggs on this one – folks pay quite
enough for movie tickets as is!!!!)
Finally there is the completely delightful The Descendants starring
George Clooney. It’s the story of a wealthy Hawaiian landowner whose wife
lies at the brink of death from a boating accident. In his grief he decides
to pay a visit to the man she was having an affair with before her accident.
This film boasts an incredible ensemble cast that is poignant, funny and
strikes a chord deep in our hearts. At least five nominations. Look, I’d
go to the movies to see George Clooney read the phone book, but he’s
particularly fine in this little gem of an indie films. I can’t wait to
see it!
Finally, and not nominated for anything because it just came out, we
have Liam Neeson and a bunch of rowdy oil riggers downed in a plane crash
in the wilds of Alaska. This is a man’s kind of adventure – you know, big
brawny men pitted against big brawny Ma Nature and it’s full of thrills and
chills and makes you so happy you’re watching this adrenaline pumper in a
comfy theater seat and not actually out there fending off cold, starvation
and a big bad wolf or two!
Now, I know you ladies wanted the new Janet Evanovich Stephanie Plum
novel-turned –movie One For The Money, but I couldn’t get it this week. I
promise I’ll bring it in very soon, along with the latest Sandra Bullock.
It’s a sad fact of life that we don’t always get what we want, and in the
movie booking business that’s especially true. But just wait a couple of
weeks and we’ll have it for you. Cross my heart.
So next week we will bring you a very appealing movie called Big
Miracle, the true story of a family of whales trapped beneath the arctic
ice. Starring the delightful Drew Barrymore, this is the totally true story
of the rescue of the whales. Now this I can’t wait to see! I LOVE animal
rescue stories and this looks to be a beauty!!!!
So, that’s the movie lowdown this week. As far as my looked-forward-to
and conversely not-looked forward-to retirement, it hasn’t happened yet.
Too many loose ends to tie up. Too much to do. But soon. Those bonbons
have my name on them. Heh heh.
See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

by
Erica Rogler

I can’t believe that we are just a week away from the start of our Wyoming County Reads project!   Have you been busy reading this year’s selection, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey? I still have some reading to do, and I encourage you, if you haven’t already, to start reading or rereading this classic novel. Our first of four book discussions will take place on Wednesday, February 1 at 7:00 p.m. at the Tunkhannock Public Library. That evening, discussion leader Bill Chapla will guide us through a literary analysis of the book as we dissect plot, character, setting and conflict. Admission is free. The three other book discussions will take place on Wednesdays, February 8, 15 and 22 at 7:00 p.m. at the Tunkhannock Public Library. We hope to see you there and hear your views on this acclaimed novel.

Another program in February that we are looking forward to is Love Letters by A.R. Gurney. Please join us for this special production as we bring two local legends to the Dietrich stage to celebrate the lifetime of friendship between Melissa Gardner (Hildy Morgan) and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III (David Zarko). This beautifully simple play, where two actors sit at a table reading letters, is at turns comic, maddening, despairing and endearing as we follow the journey through the life they shared and the connection they never lost. There will only be two performances so be sure to reserve your tickets now for either Saturday, February 11 at 7 p.m. or Sunday, February 12 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $15 each and can be purchased by calling 570-996-1500. Reserved seating is available and all proceeds benefit the Dietrich Theater.

In February, the Dietrich will also host a variety of art classes for both children and adults. For adults, the Dietrich’s own Esther Harmatz will be back to teach her ever-popular Introduction to Stained Glass class. During this workshop, you will learn the basics of creating stained glass pieces from working with a design, cutting glass, polishing, foil wrapping and soldering. By the end of the class, you will be able to leave with a finished item. Introduction to Stained Glass will be held on Monday, February 6 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Admission is $60 and all equipment and materials will be provided.

Esther will also be teaching a fantastic jewelry making class in February. Join her on Monday, February 20 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for Jewelry Making: Easy Earrings & Bracelets. In this class you will have fun learning about different types of jewelry attachments and easy wire wrapping techniques as you design a pair of earrings and bracelets. Esther will also cover how to make neat loops and coils, add bead embellishments and how to use a peg template. I took this class last summer and loved it. Admission is $60 and all materials will be supplied. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for more information or to register for either of these classes.

For children, Amy and Steve Colley will be teaching the ever-favorite Trash to Treasures art series in February. During these classes, students turn average household items into artistic treasures as they learn about this form of 3-D collage. These classes really get kids’ creative juices flowing. For a full schedule of Trash to Treasures classes for kids of all ages, visit our website www.dietrichtheater.com or call us at 570-996-1500.
