At The Dietrich by As you know, I don’t usually start out my column raving about our
gallery exhibits, but I have to make an exception this week. You absolutely
have to come into the Earnshaw and the Sherwood to see the magnificent art
collection of Lori Bogedin! This is collecting at its finest. She is so
modest and so self-effacing that she sort of pooh-poohs the idea that she
has exquisite taste in art – "No, no," she says waving her hand in a
dismissive way, "I don’t really know anything, really, I just get what I
like." Well, let me tell you right here and now, what she "likes" is
stunning, and the collection is breathtaking. This is as close as you’ll
get to an art museum in downtown T’town. Do come in and see it – there’s
something there for every taste and we are so grateful to Lori for sharing
with us. I have to say that both Lori and Jerry are not just owners of the
delightful Twigs and the wonderful little shop Lori has just opened called
Bazi Gifts (if you haven’t been, do go check it out – it’s so unique) but
they are deeply committed to the community they live in and are endlessly
generous with both their time and money in helping wherever they can. They
are always so kind to the theater, gifting food to us for special occasions.
We thank them for all they do, for the town and for the theater and you will
see when you come to the theater, that Lori has outdone herself with this
positively wondrous display.
Movie-wise, we have Big Miracle, the true story of the rescue of a
family of whales trapped under the arctic ice. It’s a terrific family film,
one the kids and adults will enjoy. Of course, it’s not for the littlest
members of the family, but six or seven and up should enjoy it immensely. It
’s really not a political film since it shows all sides of all the issues
that pop up in arctic regions – drilling, not drilling, saving animals, not
saving animals, Greenpeace and corporate biggies. And the thing is, all
these varied types, and for a variety of reasons, work together to free the
whales. And that is a miracle unto itself!
We’re holding Hugo over for one more week because people simply loved
it! How’s that for a great reason to hold over? Really, it’s just
excellent and although it’s also not for wee ones, older kids should love it
as much as the adults accompanying them.
The Grey is a whoppingly good adventure tale where the action never
stops. Man against beast and mother nature is an age old story to be
told, but apparently it’s told well in this one. I doubt that I’ll see it
since the wolves are the enemy and I can’t wrap my brain around that, but
the folks who have (especially guys) have liked it a lot. Two thumbs up!
And can you believe I still haven’t seen Descendants? This week for
sure! It’s likely only here this one more week, so be sure to catch it if
you can. I will see it this week because everything I’ve read about it is
wonderful and I can’t wait to see it. Look, I’d just go to see George
Clooney. Then add Hawaii and I’m hooked!
Next week we are planning to bring in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island
starring The Rock (Duane Johnson) which looks to be a perfect family fun
film. I mean, people and dinosaurs? Does it get any better than that?
And, hopefully, we will also have The Artist for you next week. How
delightful will that be? I feel like we’re having a mini-festival every
week!
Have a lovely week, dear friends. This January has been so strange,
hasn’t it? Almost balmy. I guess that’s good for everyone who needs to
travel or for people who have fuel bills to pay, but boy, I miss the snow.
I mean, for gosh sakes, it’s winter already. Couldn’t we have just a little
snow? Say twelve to fourteen inches? You know, something really fun? Sigh.
See you at the Dietrich.
