Folk Music Benefit for the Dietrich Theater
At the Dietrich Theater in downtown Tunkhannock
Sunday, February 26 at 3 p.m.
Admission: by donation
In response to the devastating flood of September 2011, Lorne Clarke and his musical friends will present a folk music extravaganza to help pay for the reconstruction after the Susquehanna overflowed its banks and caused great damage to all four theaters, both studios, the heating and cooling system and more. Lorne will be joined on stage by  KJ Wagner, Tom Flannery, and Michael Jerling. Join us for an afternoon of music, stories and fun back and forth banter between musicians.
For more information, please call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500.

At The Dietrich

by
Hildy Morgan

Whew! It’s over! It was great fun, but I’m so glad it’s done,
finished, kaput. Of course, I’m referring to Love Letters, one of the
loveliest adult plays I’ve run across in many years. I had so much fun with'
David Zarco sitting at the table next to me and Jennifer Jenkins directing,
honestly, it was totally cool. Jennifer is the kind of director who
discusses character with you so that you fully understand your onstage
persona. Then, bless her heart, she goes back over paragraphs or lines that
she thinks you have misinterpreted and helps you to correct. But the main
thing is that everything you do onstage is because of the internal workings
of your character, which makes it so easy to follow through on. And David
Zarco is a pro, through and through. I was the only amateur onstage and
sometimes I felt all thumbs, but once the audience was in place, my hambone
came shining through.

But the other thing that comes to the fore is the Godawful stage fright
that stopped me as a young person from following my bliss and trying for a
theatrical career. I thought maybe being older it might have faded some,
although whenever I have to speak in public I almost never remember what I’
ve said because the fear is so grave that usually all I can hear is the
pounding of my heart. But, sigh and alas, it had not faded with time, so
although I loved hearing the laughter from the audience and feeling the
wonderfully fine vibrations that came from audiences thoroughly involved
with the story, there were a couple of times during the show when it took
every bit of will power I have not to simply run off that stage, out of the
theater and just keep running. But, of course, I didn’t. It shall be filed
in my memory banks as a lovely experience (I mean, who doesn’t love
applause???), one that I thoroughly enjoyed (which I did) and one I shall
never do again(ever!).
Finally!!!! The Artist is a comin’ in! We’ve waited a long time for
this one, and you have to trust me on this – it’s a hoot! I’m going to
catch it this weekend and can’t wait. The acting, the plot, the merriness
of this film is a perfect antidote to the winter blahs. And the dog is worth
the price of the ticket alone.
Plus we have the adorable Reese Witherspoon in This Means War which
looks very dear and is a romantic comedy date night sort of flick.(Now,
guys, wouldn’t it be a nice valentiney gesture to take your sweeties to
dinner and a lovely little romantic comedy? Do you know how many points you’
d score on that???)
Of course, we still have Safe House and Journey 2, so we have all
different kinds of movies – one for every taste.
Still waiting for snow. Sigh. Just to coat the fields and make South
Auburn look like a Currier and Ives print. I mean, South Auburn is a lovely
place to live any time of the year, but the winter is particularly lovely
when the snow is on the high meadows and the trees cast dark shadows along
the stone walls. But right now everything is muted – brown fields, gray
skies, no shadows cast on brownish fields – it takes snow to give that
chiaroscuro effect. So I’m waiting for just one lousy little storm, just
asking for a couple of inches, nothing too big. Okay, maybe three or four.
Or half-a-dozen? A foot is definitely out of the question. Totally. I’ll
keep my snow prayers at just two or three. I will. I promise.
See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

by
Erica Rogler

More Than the Movies for February 22, 2012

I can only describe the Dietrich’s recent production of A.R. Gurney’s Love Letters as delightful. Hildy Morgan and David Zarko dazzled us in their roles as Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III. They had the audience laughing and crying. I had never seen the play before and was awed by how effective and beautiful the simplicity of the production was. We would like to thank Hildy, David and director Jennifer Jenkins for putting together such a lovely benefit show. Plus we are grateful to all of the folks who came out to enjoy the production. All of the show’s proceeds benefited the Dietrich Theater.

If you weren’t able to make Love Letters, you will have another opportunity to experience live theatre at the Dietrich in March with our community-based production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Dale Wasserman based on the novel by Ken Kesey. Dietrich Theater Program Coordinator Margie Young and I sat in on the cast and crew’s first-read through of the play recently, and you could just feel the actors’ excitement about their upcoming production. Tickets for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, directed by Jennifer Jenkins, are available for the following dates: Wednesday, March 21 at 7 p.m., Friday, March 23 at 7 p.m., Saturday, March 24 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 25 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at the Dietrich’s ticket booth or by calling 570-996-1500.

This Saturday, February 25 at 11 a.m., the Dietrich’s After School Theatre Arts students will be taking the stage for a live performance of the play “Life on Mars”. Written and produced by 25 middle school and high school students, this production will be full of singing, dancing and fun dialogue. They have even designed and built the set for their production with guidance from art instructors Amy and Steve Colley. As you may expect, their show is guaranteed to be out of this world! Tickets are $5 each. For more information or to purchase tickets, please call us at 570-996-1500.

Then on Sunday, February 26 at 3:00 p.m., the Dietrich will be full of music as Lorne Clarke and his musical friends present a folk music extravaganza to help pay for the Dietrich’s reconstruction after the Susquehanna overflowed its banks in September 2011 and caused great damage to the theater. In addition to Lorne, musical guests will include Tom Flannery, KJ Wagner and Michael Jerling. Join us for an entertaining afternoon of music, stories, and the artists’ fun back and forth banter. Admission is by donation. For more information, please call 570-996-1500.
