"Live! Live! Live! Life is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death!" This is Mame Dennis’s motto, a New York City gal who inherits a 10-year-old orphan boy after her brother’s death. Roaming through the roaring ’20s, failing spectacularly at jobs during the Great Depression, and embracing experimental views of a child’s education, she is no one’s idea of a role model – except for young Patrick, who adores her. But will such an irrepressible eccentric be allowed to keep her nephew? Underneath all the splash and glamour beats a heart as big as Manhattan and an unconventional love that never gives up. Based on Patrick Dennis’s bestselling 1955 novel about his aunt, Auntie Mame is an unforgettable show and a delight for all audiences. Tickets are available by calling 570-996-1500 or visiting the Dietrich’s ticket booth.
Bill W. – Movie Event
At the Dietrich Theater in downtown Tunkhannock
Wednesday, May 1 at 7:00 p.m.
Admission: Free
Sponsored by: Wyoming County C.A.R.E.S.
Bill W. tells the story of William G. Wilson, co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, a man included in TIME Magazine’s 100 Persons of the 20th Century. Interviews, recreations and rare archival material reveal how Bill Wilson, a hopeless drunk near death from alcoholism, found a way out of his own addiction and then forged a path for countless others to follow. With Bill as its driving force, A.A. grew from a handful of men to a worldwide fellowship of over 2 million men and women – a success that made him an icon in A.A., but also an alcoholic unable to be a member of the very society he had created. A reluctant hero, Bill Wilson lived a life of sacrifice and service, and left a legacy that continues every day, all around the world. The movie will be followed by a Q & A session. Tickets are available at the door while they last or they can be reserved by calling 570-996-1500.

At The Dietrich

What a grand gala it was! Ooooh, I so wish you all could have been there! It is such fun – I feel like Cinderella at the ball, a grand ball where only your friends are there and everyone is having just the best time and it’s all so wonderful and that’s why I wish everyone could be there! It was such a special night – great food. Honestly! The most divine seafood chowder from Epicurean, perfectly darling cucumber thingies with chicken salad on them from Be-Life, and then Twigs made gorgeous salmon patties that were to die for. And that was only a quarter of the food! Twelve grand items from two terrific restaurants and a third from the best caterers in the entire country! Gosh –it’s making me hungry to write about it!
And then there was the grand wine from Nimble Hill. I swear, they have the best Riesling anywhere! I just love it, and since I no longer have to speak at these occasions I could imbibe a bit, which is a great luxury.
I think folks just come to have such a good time – they have great wine, exquisite food and they are there with people they know. Because even if you come alone to gala night, you certainly won’t be alone! Everyone knows everyone else, and what’s their favorite subject? Why, the movies, of course!
Oh, and I nearly forgot – the desserts from Epicurean. Oh my goodness! Those desserts! Finger foods or in pretty little containers, each is a bite, but a delicious, melt-in-you-mouth bite that overwhelms with both simplicity and gorgeousness. Gee. Can you tell I’m a foodie? My mother always believed that food was about nourishment and of course, about taste. But to her (and therefore to me) it was also about eye-appeal. The plate needed to be colorful and the textures different.   In other words, my mother looked at food as art – and what an artist she was! And I do believe that the folks who prepare our food for gala night are food artists – every one of them. The food is amazing to behold and it’s just as delicious as could be. How much better could it get?
So all of the above is in way of saying THANK YOU to the folks who make gala night such a celebration. Bless your hearts – we are so grateful! More than you can ever know.
So, I have seen six movies so far – not all I wanted to, but I will catch up. My favorite up to this point is Quartet. Look, it’s a feel-good movie about a group of eccentric and aging musicians, and every line is thought out to see how cute it can be, but nevertheless, it is completely charming. Mostly that’s because the cast is superb – boy, I have to tell you that I could invite Billy Connolly for a cup of tea anytime. What a charmer! And any movie that has both him and Maggie Smith – well, really! It’s simply got to be wonderful, and it is. You will laugh all the way through and come out feeling good!
Oh no. I’m running out of space to tell you all about the movies I’ve seen, so I’ll just have to tell you very briefly so you won’t miss any good ones. Hyde Park on the Hudson is very charming, especially when it’s about the visit of the King and Queen. I can’t say I loved the part about his cousin, especially when I looked it up and found it mostly invented. But still, it’s well worth seeing, especially for the visit of the King to Hyde Park.
Lore is an excellent German movie about the aftermath of WW2 in Germany. It’s riveting as you hear the people still loyal to the Nazis talk about how the holocaust never happened and it was all trick photography (and there are lunatics who believe that to this day). The Impossible, about the tsunami in Thailand in 2004 is breathtaking! Gorgeous film. Harrowing. Will literally take your breath away. The Late Quartet is a moving tribute to musicians whose private lives are much messier than their musical lives. All in all, so far what I’ve seen has been good! No, better than good – excellent!   Do come. We’ll be so happy to see you!
     See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

by
Erica Rogler

Live at the Dietrich for April 10, 2013
Opening on October 31, 1956, Jerome Lawrence’s and Robert E Lee’s play Auntie Mame, adapted from Patrick Dennis best-selling novel about his aunt, became a Broadway hit. The original production starred Rosalind Russell in the title role of Mame Dennis. Other members of the original cast included Robert Allen as Mr. Babcock, Yuki Shimoda as Ito, Robert Smith as Beau, and Peggy Cass as Agnes Gooch. Receiving much acclaim for their roles, both Russell and Cass received Tony Awards nominations in 1957 with Peggy Cass winning.
Later this month, this comedic show will be brought to life on the Dietrich stage for a five-day run from April 24 through 28. Local actress Brenda Wenner will play Mame Dennis, a New York City socialite who inherits her 10 year-old orphan nephew after her brother’s death. Taking place in the Roaring Twenties, Mame fails spectacularly at jobs during the Great Depression, and embraces experimental views of a child’s education. She is no one’s idea of a role model except for young Patrick who adores her. But will such an irrepressible eccentric be allowed to keep her nephew? Find out as you experience Auntie Mame, an unforgettable show and a delight for all audiences, at the Dietrich. Tickets are $10 each and can be purchased now at the Dietrich’s ticket booth or by calling 570-996-1500. You won’t want to miss it!
Speaking of must-see entertainment, we are currently in the midst of our Spring Film Festival. I hope you have found time to take in a few of the featured movies. I will definitely be seeing the documentary Searching for Sugar Man and encourage you to see it as well. It will be showing on Friday, April 12 at 2:00 p.m. and Wednesday, April 17 at 7:00 p.m. For a complete listing of all of our festival movies and show times, visit our website www.dietrichtheater.com.
The Dietrich also has a couple of special movie events coming up in addition to the film festival. On Wednesday, May 1 at 7:00 p.m., we invite you to see Bill W. at the theater. This documentary tells the story of William G. Wilson, co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. Interviews, recreations and rare archival material reveal how Bill Wilson, a hopeless drunk near death from his alcoholism, found a way out of his own addition and then forged a path for countless others to follow. With Bill as its driving force, A.A. grew from a handful of men to a worldwide fellowship of over 2 million men and women – a success that made him an icon within A.A., but also an alcoholic unable to be a member of the very society he had created. A reluctant hero, Bill Wilson lived a life of sacrifice and service, and left a legacy that continues everyday, all around the world. The movie will be followed by a Q & A session. This event is sponsored by Wyoming County C.A.R.E.S. and admission is free. Tickets will be available at the door or they can be reserved by calling 570-996-1500.
The Dietrich will also be showing an environmental movie in May called Green Fire. Join us on Saturday, May 11 at 11 a.m. for this documentary on the life and land ethic of Aldo Leopold, one of the most important conservationists of the 20th century. Leopold is the father of the national wilderness system, wildlife management and the science of ecological restoration. The film will be followed by a Q & A session and you will have the chance to visit environmental organizations’ displays in the theater lobby after the movie. Admission is free.
In conjunction with Green Fire the movie, we invite you to read the book A Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold and then join us for book discussions at the Tunkhannock Public library led by Bob Daniels and Dr. Peter Petokas. These discussions will be held on Wednesdays, May 8 and 15 at 7 p.m. This film and book discussion project has been sponsored by Countryside Conservancy, South Branch Tunkhannock Creek Watershed Coalition, Lower Tunkhannock Creek Watershed Association, the Overlook Estate Foundation, the Dietrich Theater, the North Branch Land Trust and the Endless Mountains Heritage Region. For more information or to reserve tickets to the movie, please contact the Dietrich at 570-996-1500.
