At The Dietrich by Oh, my goodness! The Dietrich is just buzzing with activity! Methinks it isn’t just mamma nature that’s so busy this time of year! Between movies and cultural events, there is hardly time to take a breath! Really, if you want to see something totally impressive, pull up the Dietrich site on the web and look at the list of activities there for all to partake in! Honestly, those cultural folks must be up all night thinking of things to do and classes to teach and plays to direct etcetera, etcetera, etcetera, as the King would have said.
Just this weekend we have Peter and the Wolf, another superb production by our wonderful Executive Director and Director Extraordinaire Jennifer Jenkins, in the Evans theater, Saturday morning at 11:00, for the enjoyment of children of any age. It’s a wonderful production and it’s free, so do bring the kids. You know, there is nothing in the world quite like the thrill of live theater, and it’s something that children should see from the time they are very young. I fear sometimes that our children are so tuned into the perfection of film and recorded music, that they might grow up thinking that only art professionally produced is real art. I worry that families don’t gather around the piano (or guitar or whatever) and make their own music, or that little ones don’t throw a curtain over their wee selves and become emperors of ancient lands, acted out in the living room for the family’s delight.
So bring the children to see live theater when you can – and Peter and the Wolf is a perfect start if they haven’t come to Jennifer’s children’s productions before. I promise you they will be delighted as the classic story comes alive and is acted out in front of them. And it will open all kinds of creative doors for them when they see what regular people can do with a bit of greasepaint and some lights and a good story and a whole heap of talent!
Prefect segue into a Dietrich bus trip (yeah, from our stage to the Broadway stage – not too shabby, hmmmm? Heh heh). The theater is taking the bus to New York City to see Rodgers and Hammerstein’s glorious production of Cinderella. And not just ANY production, it’s a Douglas Carter Beane script and he adds a few delightful twists to the story of a not-so-obedient Ella and a Prince with a social conscience. The dance numbers are to die for, the costuming is the stuff of dreams, and we all know that Beane is one of the finest stage writers alive, so do think of coming with us to have one heck of a good time! We’ll get to the Big Apple in the mid-morning and be on our own for lunch, then go to the play and then – oh yeah, I almost forgot – there will be a question and answer session with the cast just for those of us from the Dietrich (wow!!!! How’s that for too cool for school????). And then it’s off to Carmines for dinner, family style, with the entire bus of merry travellers having dinner together and sharing stories of our day of adventure. Now doesn’t that sound wonderful? So call 996-1500 for your reservation. It will be such a fine day indeed!
Oh yeah, and this Sunday there will be the Gamut Players production of Romeo and Juliet in the theater. Oh, my heavens. How will we do all of this and still have time of all these great movies coming up????? Oh, no! What to do, what to do! Arrrrgggghhhhhh!

Or could your grandfather sound like a bassoon? Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev pondered these questions during his 1936 symphony for children – Peter and the Wolf. And the Dietrich Children’s Theatre will be bringing this beloved children’s tale to life on the Dietrich stage this Saturday, May 18 at 11 a.m. Join us on this adventure as we see Peter and his friends imagine catching a wolf with the help of the orchestra. Gather up your kids and family for this must-see show. Admission is free thanks to funding from the Pennsylvania Humanities Council. Tickets can be reserved by calling 570-996-1500 or they will be available at the door while they last. We will also be bringing the Gamut Theatre Group’s production of Romeo and Juliet to the Dietrich this weekend. All are welcome to attend this free performance on Sunday, May 19 at 3:00 p.m. This show is the perfect opportunity to introduce preteens and teens to Shakespeare. The performance is 80-minutes in length and is an original text adaptation of this classic love story. When I was growing up, my mother and her friends took me to a few of the Great Bard’s plays when Misericordia University hosted Theatre-on-the-Green. My appreciation for theatre really developed then. I may not have understood all of the elements of each play, but each show gave my mother and me plenty to discuss during the weeks following each performance.
This will be the sixth year we will be bringing in the Gamut Theatre Group of Harrisburg to perform Shakespeare. After all of their shows, the actors stay for a talk back session with the audience. It’s a wonderful opportunity for audience members to ask questions about the play, find out what it is like to be a professional actor and more! I enjoy the talk back sessions just as much as their performances. This free show has been sponsored by the Overlook Estate Foundation. Tickets are available by calling 570-996-1500 or at the Dietrich’s ticket booth while they last.
Speaking of theatre, the Dietrich will be hosting a bus trip on June 5 to see Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella on Broadway, which was written by part-time Tunkhannock resident Douglas Carter Beane. Before the show, we will have time to explore the city. After the show, all participants will enjoy a family-style dinner at Carmine’s. Tickets are $235 each and include an orchestra ticket to Cinderella, bus transportation and dinner (including tips and tax), plus a contribution to the Dietrich Theater. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for more information or to register.
The Dietrich also has a special event coming up on Thursday, May 23 at 7:00 p.m. A member of the Dietrich Writers Group will be giving a free talk on e-publishing. The lecture will be followed by a Q & A session. Admission is free. All are welcome to attend. For more information, please contact the Dietrich at 570-996-1500.
