I just have to tell you about the little boy who came to see Jennifer’s lovely production of Peter and the Wolf. (I have to begin this by saying that this is children’s theater, so Jennifer’s wolf was not killed, but rather taken to the zoo where he would always have lots to eat.) This child was so dear. I’d say not quite three, and enamored of the really grand production. Of course, after the shows, Fiona Powell (from WVIA) talks to the audience and takes questions from the children. Those questions vary from queries about the characters to personal questions to the actors. Whatever they ask, Fiona comes up with an answer, as do the actors who are there during the Q and A. So this little fella was seated with his Mum toward the back and he had his hand up for a long time, because Fiona didn’t see him. When she finally did she came bounding down the aisle and he asked her in his querulous, tiny voice… “Did Peter come to visit the wolf after he was in the zoo?” He was very worried that the wolf would be lonely. What a great kid! What a big heart! What a wonderful play to evoke such feeling from someone so small!
There are still a couple of tickets for the bus trip to see Cinderella. 996-1500. It is a gorgeous musical and just eating at Carmine’s is worth the trip (no, not really….the musical is, like, the reason…)but give it a try. If you’ve never gone with us to the Big Apple, you’re in for a treat. If you have, then you know what a good time you’re gonna have.
And now, I really, really have to talk about the movie!!! Every single movie we’re showing this weekend is totally terrific! I kid you not! Every one!
Let me start with Gatsby, which I saw the other day and am going to see again on Wednesday night. I can’t even begin to tell you how wonderful this movie is. Now, you know, I’m very tough on movies – as much as I love them, they almost always are flawed, in my book. But this one had me spellbound from the very beginning. It is not only cinematically exquisite, but the casting is perfect and the acting superb. DiCaprio is a perfect Gatsby, and Carey Mulligan is utterly Daisy. It is a thoroughly Fitzgerald work, where the rich are careless and soulless, and Gatsby, so convinced he can remake the past, is, as the narrator says at the end, “worth the whole lot of them.” It’s a long movie, and I usually start fidgeting at the 95 minute mark, but I never moved, from beginning to end. Do come see it. Ladies, it is one of the great love stories ever filmed, even if the love was only Gatsby’s and Daisy wasn’t worth a moment of his time.
Okay, then there is Epic, for kids of all ages! It’s a grand Twentieth Century Fox production about a brave teen-age girl who finds herself deep, deep in the forest caught in a battle between good and evil. Oooooh. Terrific animation and lots of laughs. Plus, it’s always good for girls to have great and courageous role models even if they are in animation.
I don’t really have to say anything about Fast and Furious! You either like the Fast and Furious franchise or you don’t. I happen to think they are great fun – totally mindless and silly and just a hoot. The stars are wonderful – Vin Diesel and The Rock just to name two, and it’s all about fast cars and tough women. If you’d just like to forget your troubles for a couple of hours, come to see a flick guaranteed to help you out.
Star Trek is wonderful. For all you Trekkies out there, this is a noble entry in the Trek journey. It’s well done and fun, although a bit darker than the others. If you haven’t seen it, yet, give yourself a treat and put it on your viewing schedule.
Wee Roxie died this week – she was eighteen years old, quite an advanced age for a Jack Russell. She was such an enthusiast for life, and no matter what stuff came her way, she was always willing to give it a happy-go-lucky try. She weighed less than ten pounds, but there is a mighty big hole in our hearts at her absence. My comfort is the sure knowledge that she is bossing around far larger dogs in heaven. Trust me. She really is.
     See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

by
Erica Rogler

Live at the Dietrich for May 22, 2013

The Dietrich Children’s Theatre recently delighted families and young children at the theater with their stage version of Peter and the Wolf. It was absolutely enchanting! I loved the music, colorful set and costumes, of course, the beautiful story. During this interactive play, audience members learned a little Russian and helped Peter and his friends on their adventure. We would like to thank the Dietrich’s own Jennifer Jenkins for directing the play and the Pennsylvania Humanities Council for funding the production.

In early June, we will continue celebrating live theatre with a bus trip to Broadway to see Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. Join us on Wednesday, June 5 for this fun-filled trip. Before the show, we will have time to explore the city. And after the show, Douglas Carter Beane has arranged for a Q & A session with the cast of Cinderella! This will be a first for us. Douglas Carter Beane wrote the new book for this magical Broadway production, and he is also a part-time resident of Tunkhannock. After the Q & A, we will enjoy a family-style dinner at Carmine’s on Broadway. Tickets are $235 each and include bus transportation, an orchestra ticket to Cinderella, dinner (including tips and tax) and a contribution to the Dietrich Theater. Call the Dietrich Theater at 570-996-1500 to sign up.

And you don’t want to miss 4th Friday in Tunkhannock this month. On Friday, May 24, we will present Open Mic at 7:00 p.m. Come prepared to get on stage or to be entertained. We welcome musicians, poets, storytellers, comedians and other performers. Then at 8:15 p.m., Nygel Metcalfe will take the stage for a spoken word performance. He is a fourth year literature student at St. Stephen’s University. Nygel moonlights as a writer, coach and consultant for the Breaking Ground Poets. Admission is free. Doors open for Open Mic sign-ups at 6:30 p.m. Reserve your slot early. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for more information.

Then on Sunday, May 26 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., the Dietrich will host the Breaking Ground Poets Poetry Slam. In this live competition, members of the Breaking Ground Poets will perform original poetry over the course of three rounds before a panel of judges. The focus of a poetry slam is not the written word, but rather, it is a celebration of the art of oral interpretation and performance with emphasis on the interaction between poet and audience. You’ll find a diverse range of work within the slam, including heartfelt love poetry, searing social commentary and more. Breaking Ground Poets is a Tunkhannock-based group of young people bonded by their love of poetry and self-expression. This poetry slam will be moderated by Amye Archer. Tickets are $5 each. Come out and support our young poets!
