At The Dietrich

Hildy Morgan

Well, for a bit of time it looked pretty bleak. We only have two digital screens and to get what we wanted for the week we would need them both, but we had a digital movie that we had promised to keep and, well, as I said, it was looking pretty bleak. And then, as so often happens, our incredible film buyer came through in a big way! I’d had to leave the office so I didn’t know how the drama had worked out, but then Ronnie texted me. “We got it!” the text read. We got it! I breathed one long sigh of relief and turned to my husband – “We got the Butler,” I said. “Is that good?” he said. Sigh.
Yes, yes, yes! The Butler opens here at the Dietrich and I am so relieved. It looks to be an old-fashioned sort of movie, the kind they did in the Fifties, a saga, really – about the man who was the personal butler to eight presidents. Starring, among others, Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, Vanessa Redgrave, Robin Williams and Jane Fonda, it is a chronicle of our times through the eyes of an African American serving the most powerful men in the world. It looks to be a bit of a tear-jerker, a good lesson in history and just a wonderful and thoroughly absorbing film!
And for those of you who have been so very patient, we have RED 2 for your viewing pleasure. I can‘t wait to see it – I know this one is pure fun – starring all those actors who are just that little bit older (Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, Anthony Hopkins) and therefore great fun to watch. I don’t have to explain this movie except to say – come see it! What a good time!
And we are holding Planes (a wonderful kiddie treat) and Smurfs (for the wee ones) and We Are The Millers which has been dubbed as almost as funny as The Heat – just an eyelash off, but very, very funny nevertheless.
And now on to festival! Guess how many films we have??? (Don’t answer if I already told you, because that is totally not fair.) The answer is nineteen! Yeah – nineteen! We’ve never done that many! It’s sooo exciting. So I thought I would let you know what they are so you can get even more excited. I honestly think it’s one of our best lineups ever! Really. Ever.
Okay. Here goes.  Blue Jasmine, 20 Feet From Stardom, Still Mine, Stories We Tell,
Unfinished Song, The Way Way Back, Before Midnight, Museum Hours, The Hunt, Hannah Arendt, Austenland, Blackfish, Renoir, Much Ado About Nothing, The Attack, Fill The Void, Fruitvale Station, A Hijacking, The English Teacher.
How’s that for a fabulous list???? And we tried very hard to make sure each film had at least one day showing and one night showing. We want to make sure that everyone gets a chance to see each and every film.
And the reservations are pouring in for opening night. If you want to save a certain seat the time has come to make that call! As you know, the last three festival galas have completely sold out both the Murray and the Evans theaters, so you’ll want to call early. 996-1500 will get you that special seat. And Jennifer just announced at a meeting today that the caterers for gala will be Twigs (Oh, Yeah!), Epicurian (Mmmmm and so pretty!), The Fireplace (Ooooh, sooo good!) and Greenley’s (Yum!). Plus, all that superb wine and that oh-so-cool beer from Nimble Hill. And the flowers from Eb’s make it look so autumny and gorgeous. SIGH. It’s just the best night ever and we want you all to come and be part of it. Food, wine and great movies. Honestly, now – could it ever possibly be better than that???? 996-1500.
     See you at the Dietrich.
