At The Dietrich

See? I wasn’t fibbing. I finally got “Million Dollar Baby” in the theater! Can you believe it? Only how many months after its release??? Sometimes the movie companies (you’ll find this so hard to believe) are unreasonable by any normal standards. Perhaps that’s the catch. What’s normal about Hollywood?

Anyway, that little rant over, we really do have “Million Dollar Baby” for you this week and I can’t wait to see it. I don’t think you go away feeling cheery and all warm and fuzzy after you see this movie. Like so many Clint Eastwood films, the subject matter is gritty and the lessons are hard. But he’s a fascinating director with great stories to tell. And Hillary Swank is one of those gifted young actresses who simply turns into the character she’s playing. We only have it for one week, so if you’ve waited to catch it at the Dietrich, make sure you make time for it now, because we have to let it go when the festival starts.

For those with tiny kiddies we have two noon matinees of the Disney Pooh’s Heffalump movie. The little ones will love it – it’s typical gentle, sweet for the young-‘uns Disney. Once again we only have it for two noon mats and then it’s gone forever, so if you want to see it, the time is now.

Second week for “Miss Congeniality 2” and it’s an entertaining piece of fluff. No heavy message here – just Sandra Bullock being her delightful self. This movie is no great shakes, but it’s a nice night out with the girls. You know, a little popcorn, some Jr. Mints, (maybe a small glass of wine before you come) and a gaggle of girlfriends, and this movie is a good time. So come on down, ladies. The holiday is over, the meals have been cooked and the dishes washed and put away. Time for a little “just-for-me” time. And what better place to relax and let your hair down then our super terrific local theater?

So Erica handed me a note a few minutes ago and said – “Tell them about the batik classes.” So, I’m telling you about the batik classes. I had to look it up. I didn’t know what it was. It is drawing designs on cloth with beeswax and then coloring the empty parts of the cloth. (So, that’s cool, right?) It’s being taught by Gail Jones from Forksville, who is a registered artist with the Bradford County Regional Council of the Arts. The classes will be held in the Dorothy G. Sheldon Art Studio. Call 996-1500 for details.

We’re starting a membership drive, coinciding, of course, with the film festival. We’ll have membership forms at the theater and many went out in the mail as part of the festival brochure. If you can be generous and become a member, please know how grateful we are. As you now, the movies pretty much pay for themselves. But all those art classes need a little help along the way. Remember, aside from the school, we are the largest provider of the arts in the county. And we’re asking you to help us serve everyone – we have never turned any child away because their parents couldn’t afford to pay for classes. We “scholarship” all those children. Your donations will underwrite classes for all the children – isn’t that a wonderful thing to do? How better could you use those dollars than to encourage young spirits to soar and glide into the heavens of creativity? Look at it as an investment – in the future of a child. It doesn’t get better than that.

Still a few seats left for opening night of the festival. Great movies. Great desserts (Oh, those Epicurean Delight folks!) Great company. Whoa! It’s totally cool!

See you at the Dietrich!

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

Wow, I wasn’t quite prepared for the snowstorm we had last Wednesday! What a change. The evening before I was examining the beginnings of crocuses on my front lawn after a nice evening walk on a 50°F day. As a native, I guess I should know by now how unpredictable spring weather is in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Well, whether it rains, snows, or shines in the spring, one constant is that the Dietrich offers a great variety of classes. Our new brochures for our spring and summer classes are here. Call the theater at 570-996-1500 to request a brochure and we will send one to you in the mail.

Tomorrow, March 31st, the Dietrich will sponsor a Drumming Workshop from 7:00 - 9:00 pm with Maxwell Kofi Donkor, Master Drummer at Father Nallin Hall, across the street from the Dietrich. Maxwell brings will him a vast knowledge of African culture and drumming. Take part in a drumming circle with multiple rhythms. Drums are provided. All that is needed is a desire to drum. Call 570-996-1500 to register.

Amy and Steve Colley, both of who have their Masters of Arts from the Parson School of Design, have a great line up of spring classes for you and your kids at the Dietrich. For the little ones, Amy will teach a “Mommy and Me Mixed Media” class for 3 and 4 year olds on Mondays from noon - 12:45pm and “Preschool Art” for 4 and 5 year olds on Thursdays from noon - 12:45pm. “Mommy and Me” is a great opportunity for parent and child to bond while interacting with other families. Preschool Art is fun for little ones as it helps get them ready to go to school. It was cute to see some of the “Preschool Art” and “Mommy and Me” art students and their families come in for the Dietrich’s reception for our “Art of Us” exhibit, which was displayed in the Earnshaw Gallery for the months of February and March. They were so proud of their colorful artwork.

In “Mixed Media” students learn about a famous artist each week in a variety of art movements while creating their own works of art in mediums including clay, tempera, charcoal, pastels, and more. Children ages 5 -12 have the opportunity to take “Mixed Media” on either Wednesdays or Fridays from 4:00 - 5:30 pm in April. Admission is $30 for four classes. Please call 570-996-1500 to preregister.

Steve Colley will also continue to teach “Pottery and Sculpture” and “Portfolio Prep” for adults this spring. Pottery classes will be on Wednesdays, April 6 - 27 from 7:00 - 8:30 pm. Steve teaches this class for students ages 13 to adult. What is great about this instructor is that his teaching style is very individualized. He works with those with no experience as well as those more advanced and helps both groups move to the skill level they would like to be at. In “Portfolio Prep”, students are able to build a diverse art portfolio as they learn new techniques. You work with a variety of materials as you draw, paint, and create pottery and sculpture. “Portfolio Prep” is held on Tuesdays, April 5th - 26th from 4:00 - 5:30 pm. Admission to either of these classes is $45, all materials are provided.

Gail Jones, registered artist with the Bradford County Regional Council on the Arts, will bring the fiber art of Batik to the Dietrich Theater in April and May. Adults and children and teens will have the opportunity to practice the basics of Batik on an array of materials. Classes will be held at the Dietrich Theater’s Dorothy G. Sheldon Art Studio on Mondays in April though June 6. Classes for ages 7-15 will be from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. Classes for adults will be from 6:30-8:30 pm. For information and to register, phone 996-1500.

Spring also means new quilting projects at the Dietrich. In our “Quilting for Kids” class taught by Ingrid Rogler and Gloria Eastwood, children ages 6 and up, will be going on an Amish adventure. On Wednesdays, April 6 - June 8th from 3:30 - 5:00 pm, kids will learn the art of Amish and explore their use of color while recreating classic quilt designs. In Ingrid’s “Intergenerational Quilting” class on Wednesday from 6:00 - 7:30 pm, students will create the traditional Log Cabin pattern of the 1800s. Admission is $6.00 per class for either of these series and all materials are provided and prepped.
