At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

Oh my goodness! Festival is so much fun and so, so exhausting! Poor Omar and Mary Francis. They’ve been carting films around for two weeks, coming in early, staying late. How lucky we are to have such dedicated staff. One of our particularly wondrous volunteers, Bob Kulow, said to me a couple of weeks ago – “I really like it here. It’s not like people have jobs at the Dietrich – it’s that they have a sense of mission.” I think that’s so true – especially when it’s something as difficult and rewarding as festivals. If it weren’t for a completely dedicated staff we could never show “fourteen films in fourteen days.”

Once again we have learned much during festival time. Some of the films were so fine and appealed to such a broad audience that you have to wonder why they only make a few prints. I would think a film like Les Choristes, or Being Julia or Merchant of Venice could all have played well commercially. So, once again, I just don’t get how the movie business works, and I’ve been doing it for four years.

We did have some trouble with a couple of the films – Vera Drake and House of Flying Daggers came in damaged so they broke down a few times. Sometimes folks get very impatient when that happens (most people don’t – just some) but there’s nothing we can do with a damaged film but try our best to see that it plays without interruption. Sometimes, try as we might, that just isn’t possible. But I do want you to know that everyone feels just awful if there’s a break in the film. We so want it to be perfect for you.

So, now that festival is over, you’re probably wondering what we’re going to bring you. Two really, really good films. We’re bringing you the Bollywood production of “Bride and Prejudice”, the musical version of Jane Austin’s classic novel, straight from India! It’s a lavish, wonderfully colorful production that’s full of fun and earned two thumbs way up from Ebert and Roeper. And speaking of two thumbs way up, our other film, “The Upside of Anger” is a superb film starring Kevin Kostner and Joan Allen. R rated for it’s adult content, it’s considered an art film by the critics and, once again, had only a very limited release.

So, what do you have to look forward to in the weeks to come? Well, for one very big thing, we are going to bring in Ridley Scott’s “Kingdon of Heaven”. A film about the Crusades, the trailers on this one actually give you chills they’re so good. In case you’re not familiar with the director, he’s the fellow who directed “Gladiator”. So guys, this is a film you won’t want to miss. At the Dietrich, of course.

I’m curious about which films you liked best from festival. Drop me an e.mail (or a note if you don’t have a computer) at hildya@epix.net and let me know. I think my absolute favorite was Being Julia, but close on its heels was Postmen In The Mountains. I just loved that film. And The Merchant of Venice. It was so superb. I saw most of the films, not all, so for me the ones I cared least about were our documentaries. I like the form but I didn’t like these two in particular. Bright Leaves seemed to be all over the place, and Born into Brothels was way too much for me. I don’t like real life cameras looking at children or critters in distress. It makes me feel sick – but it’s an excellent documentary. Excellent. Just not for me. (If that makes sense.)

Don’t forget that our Golden Days of Radio players are performing next Tuesday night. Make some time for them. They’re really, really good!

Enjoy this warm weather, now. We so deserve it! See you at the Dietrich!

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

Only one day remains in the Dietrich’s Spring 2005 Film Festival. I have to admit I’ve seen Being Julia twice and have heard so many great things about The Chorus. People seem to laugh and cry during that film. One of our patron’s who attends all of the festival movies thought that teachers should see the film to see the impact they have on their students’ lives. I still want to see the movie The Sea Inside since it is so topical. This poignant true story is about a paralyzed man’s desire to die with dignity. If you haven’t had the opportunity to see Being Julia or the Sea Inside tomorrow is your last chance.

Besides enjoying the Spring Film Festival, the Dietrich is also celebrating throughout April the Month of the Young Child. On Thursday, April 21st at 1:30 pm, the Dietrich will present a puppet show with puppeteer Tom Knight in the large theater. Admission is free. We teamed up with H.A.N.D.S. of Wyoming County to bring you this event. H.A.N.D.S. is an organization that works with families and professionals to promote healthy early childhood development. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 for details.

We also are promoting the Month of the Young Child by offering “Preschool Art” and “Mommy and Me Mixed Media” through June. Our next session of “Mommy and Me” will be held on Mondays at 12:00 pm – 12:45 pm from May 2 through May 23. Amy Colley, who has her Masters in Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design, will take young artists and their Moms, Dads, or grandparents on an art adventure as they create masterpieces out of clay, tempera, watercolor, and collage. This class is perfect for three year olds who have never been in a classroom situation before. It is also good for four year olds who need a little more bonding time with Mom or Dad. Admission is $25 for four classes and you can register by calling 570-996-1500.

“Preschool Art” is a great art class for those four and five year olds ready to be on their own. These independent tikes will be introduced to a famous artist each week as they explore a variety of mediums including clay, tempera, watercolors, collage, etc. In May, “Preschool Art” will be held on Thursdays, May 5 through May 26 from noon – 12:45 pm. Admission is also $25 for each series of four classes.

To start out May, we will have some great Mother’s Day programs. On Thursday, May 5th from 3:30 – 5:00 pm, Sarah Sidorek will teach a Mother’s Day craft class. Children ages 10 and up can paint a gift box and make earrings for Mom or Grandma. Admission is $8.00. Space is limited, so register now.

Then on Mother’s Day, Sunday, April 8th at 2 pm, the Dietrich Theater will host the Wyoming County Chorale’s Gala Mother’s Day Concert with music by Vaughn Williams, Billy Joel, David Childs. This concert will also feature premiers of several new works by Montrose artist-composer Warren Furman. The Chorale, under the direction of Carl Shinko, will be accompanied by Christiana Oppenhimer-Vaida, cello; Richard Massbauer, double bass; Monica Spichock, vibraphone; and Ron Stabinsky. This musical event will have something for everyone. Admission is $7.00.

As a final note, The Dietrich Theater and Tunkhannock Public Library would like to thank the Wyoming Sullivan County Bar Association for their contribution to Wyoming County Reads: One County, One Book, One Movie.
