At The Dietrich

By
Hildy Morgan

So here’s what I’d like to do. I’d like to write a letter to Hollywood. It would go something like this. Dear Mr. Hollywood. Do you have any working brains left or are they evaporated because absolute power corrupts absolutely which causes gray matter to shrink leaving you most likely not bright enough to breathe on your own? Or something. Here’s the thing. Kingdom of Heaven is a terrific film. It’s a good story about a decent man gone to Jerusalem to do penance for his young wife who, despondent over the death of their child, has committed suicide, which, in 1158 would leave her burning in hell. His quest is righteous, albeit brutal, and the ensuing love story a sweet one. Typical of Ridley Scott, it is a superb film. So why the letter to Mr. or Ms. Hollywood? Because they put out a testosterone laden movie on Mother’s Day weekend. (Oh, yeah – the second big release was House of Wax, a movie in the new Warner Brothers horror line.)

So, which one of those would you like to take your mother to on the holiday? Restaurants were overflowing. Mother’s Day is a day folks lucky enough to still have their Mom with them, usually like to do something special with her. Dinner and a movie is very special. But, pray tell, what movie? Now, as you’ll be able to tell from the caps, I’m shouting “WHAT MOVIE?”

Why, when family films (you know - the kind you can bring the kids to, or Mom, or little sis)do so well at box office do they continue to put out super-sexed, super-violent movies. Box office has been down almost four months now. And still they don’t have a clue. Honestly, not a clue. Maybe I’m going to have to go to Los Angeles and see some of these people. (Yeah – like that’s in the near future, don’t you think? I’m sure the head of a big studio would really want to hear anything from the manager of a tiny theater in Smalltown USA.) But really, wouldn’t it be great if we could see some of these guys and tell them to start making what we want to see and we’ll bring the family back.

Okay. Enough. I’m done with my little diatribe. Just for the record, although not real family entertainment, both films showing at the Dietrich are first-class in their genres. The teens just love House of Wax and the grown-ups who have seen Kingdom of Heaven have thought it excellent. Come see them if you are so inclined because they won’t be with us for long.

Thursday, May 19th at 12:01 a.m. we will start the showings of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. We are taking reservations for advanced tickets for the midnight show as well as the 7:00’s on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights (the 19th, 20th, and 21st). You really won’t need advanced tix for the other shows – just come early. And if by chance an afternoon one should sell out (they seldom do for this age-group movie) you can buy right then for the next one. We hope it will be big – the buzz on it is fantastic, and George Lucas has said this is it. There will be no more in the Star Wars series. From what I understand, even if you haven’t been a big fan of the others, this one is extremely well done with the battle between good and evil, the light and, of course, the dark side. More for the grown-ups than the kids, although ten and up should enjoy it. For reservations call 996-1509.

On Memorial Day weekend we will open (finally!!!) a family film that is truly hilarious and great, great fun – Madagascar! By the Dreamworks folks, this looks to be an absolute wonder of a film. One for all ages. We’ve been running the trailers for a few weeks and I can’t wait!

This is the last week or so that Maureen will be sending out membership notices, so if you aren’t a member, please consider signing up when you get the card in the mail. We try to entertain a lot of folks here in many different ways, and sometimes we need a little help from our friends. So, if you can, be generous. If you can’t, that’s okay too. We still loves ya. Honest!

See you at the Dietrich!
