Week eighteen of Hollywood’s slump and we’re starting to feel it. Maybe Disney shouldn’t have put a young lady with some bad behavior in a G rated movie. Maybe if you show a G rated movie it can’t be with an X rated star. Maybe, cute as Herbie is, (and, honestly, it is) people would like to see an original movie. Maybe a million re-makes just don’t do it. Maybe the price of gas has people thinking twice about long trips. Maybe Hollywood shouldn’t be so eager for instant gratification by putting out DVD’s of a movie right on the heels of the cinema release. Maybe, maybe, maybe. Hollywood has not had such a prolonged slump since we opened the theater. Now, don’t get me wrong. People went to movies through the Great Depression - - I do believe everyone will be back one of these days. But, I have to tell you, it’s a long time without a sell-out and it starts to be scary.

Oh, the angst of it all. Was it something I said? Something I did? Something I didn’t say. Something I didn’t do. Oy. You could make yourself totally crazy with this stuff.

So, listen, in order to make sure we aren’t all hauled away for a long rest, please do come to the movies this weekend and see War of the Worlds. It’s great! No, I’m not kidding you. It’s great and scary and dark and thrilling. Come see it before I have a total nervous breakdown. It’s up to you, folks. Only you can save me from such a horrible fate. (heh.heh.)

So, we really do have two good movies for you. War of the Worlds is superb, and Herbie is very cute. I have to say I wish Tom Cruise would shut up. The lead actor acting like a visitor from outer space probably isn’t a good idea even if the movie is about a visitor from outer space. Or something.

On July 15, we bring you Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, so it should be a very good summer. If I live. Which is dependent on you coming to the movies. But, don’t let me make you feel pressured. Okay - - maybe just a little bit.

So, get this. Frank Oliver works in Pittsburgh during the week. And he eats at the same restaurant every night - - the Café Euro. So he goes to eat there on a night last week and there’s a big party going on. So Frank is going to leave, but the maitre d’ asks him to stay. So Frank tells me he went to some premier of a “Dracula film”, or something, and he’s wearing dark glasses and lots of the folks think he’s one of the big bosses on the film shoot. As it turns out, Frank was not at a “Dracula” movie, but at the premier of George Romero’s Land of the Dead which debuted in Pittsburgh where the entire sequence of Zombie films has been made. I told him it seemed a very big waste to have someone at a premier party for a world famous horror director and not know who he even was! I think I’m mad about that. The unfairness of it all. Ah, another thing to have lots of angst over.

For those of you who loved the Chamber Music concert here last summer, the same group will be performing at Shadow Brook, July 10, at three o’clock. They were superb musicians, so just giving you a heads up. We would have loved to have brought them back, but our film schedule didn’t allow.

So, that’s all the news form the Dietrich this week. Have a wonderful Fourth of July. While your picnicking with your friends and family, remember the young men and women fighting overseas. No matter what you may think of this war, these young soldiers are the bravest of the brave. They are strong, and true and decent. And in constant danger. They are ever faithful. We need to be, too.

See you at the Dietrich.

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

After this upcoming holiday weekend of family gatherings, fireworks, and films, the Dietrich will have a great lineup of events, classes, and camps
to entertain you throughout July. For families we will continue our Second Saturday series with a concert on Saturday, July 9th from 11:00 am –noon
with performer Bill Frye. He is a local musician and storyteller. He always captivates families during our Holiday Workshop in December with
guitar playing. Admission is free. It will be a great way to spend a hot July morning!

Due to the popularity of “Open Studio for Painting and Drawing”, we are having additional sessions in July on Tuesdays, July 12, 19, 26 from 7:00-8:30 pm. Admission is $45 for adults and $30 for children. Our “Pottery & Sculpture, for Adults” class will also continue in July on Mondays excluding July 4th. Adults and students ages 13 and up of all levels of experience are welcome to attend. We have pottery wheels and Steve also teaches hand-building techniques. Admission is $35 for three classes and all materials are provided. I believe Steve can teach just about anyone the art of pottery. You should see him teach four and five year olds how to throw pots on the wheel. The tots in “Mommy & Me Mixed Media” and “Preschool Art” love to get their little hands into the wet clay!

On Fridays in July, the Dietrich is proud to welcome back Everhart Museum staff for “Everhart Ancient Art Explorations”. This is a really unique series of classes. Students will explore the art of ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt, Cave art, and Babylonian art. During each class they will see a slide show of museum pieces of the art they will learn about and then do a project, which represents that type of art. For example, one week, they make brass rubbings. We have a morning session for children ages 5 to 8 from 10:00-11:00 am and later session for kids ages 9 to 12 from 11:30 am-12:30 pm. Admission to these classes is free. Space is limited, so call 570-996-1500 to register.

Then during the week of Monday, July 18th through Friday, July 22nd from 9:30-11:00 am, Amy Colley, M.F.A. will present “Mask Making Camp” at the Dietrich. Campers will create masks from all kinds of mediums, learn about the history and functions of masks, and explore the world of 3D art. Making
a mask in my fourth grade art class was probably one of my most memorable school projects. Children ages five to twelve are welcome. Admission is $45.00. We will host an abbreviated “Mask Making Camp” for preschoolers on Tuesday, July 26th to Thursday, July 28 from 10:00-10:45 am. Call 570-996-1500 to register.

We also will have an event for the entire family on Saturday, July 23rd from 2:00 pm-5:00 pm at Tunkhannock’s Riverside Park, “Celebrate Our River Day”. Included in the day’s activities is an outdoor bluegrass/folk music concert performed by John Hazard and the Floaters. John has a degree in biology and has taught environmental workshops for elementary students, at-risk teenagers and mentally ill adults at the Spencer Crest Nature Center in
Corning, NY. The concert will be interspersed with tales of John’s boat trips down the Susquehanna River. Environmental organizations including the
North Branch Land Trust, Countryside Conservancy, and the Wyoming County Conservation District have agreed to set up booths to educate families about
and to promote the value of one of our greatest resources, the Susquehanna River. For more information, please contact 570-996-1500.
