At The Dietrich

Hildy Morgan

Wow! It really isn’t Labor Day already, is it? Weren’t we complaining about the winter weather just a few weeks ago? Surely, we can’t be headed into fall at this very moment. Oh. I guess we are. Well, that’s okay with me because autumn is my favorite season. Still, summer went so fast, didn’t it? Maybe it’s just that I’m an old lady now. I remember the summers being endless when I was a child. My mother would pack a lunch for my cousin and me and we’d head out on the roads of the Pocono’s on our English racer bikes - - our most treasured possessions - - and be gone all day, exploring the dirt roads that so often ended in an old apple orchard, or a blueberry bog. It seemed like those warm, sunny days would go on forever. And now, here I am with the days rushing by in something akin to a blur, and a melancholy sense that each season is to be cherished and held close because it is so fleeting.

And I do love the autumn. It’s perfect for walking - - ask my Jacks, they’ll tell you. And of course the colors are astonishing. And Jeannie and Roger Jayne have all their wonderful apples for sale. Nothing better than a fresh picked apple in the fall of the year - - especially when they’re grown in the Auburn’s - - God’s own country! (I am prejudiced here since I think the Auburn’s are the best place in the world, but there are other great orchards around and you have my permission to buy your apples from them. It’s okay. Honest.)

Okay. Okay. So I’m stalling a bit. The summer is over and the movies for the last week are, shall we say, not art films. (I’m practicing tact here.) I had said I really really didn’t want to bring in The Dukes of Hazzard, but I got an awful lot of calls from “tweenies” who didn’t get to the Cinemark to see it. So I brought it in. This is not rocket science, folks, but it is mindless fun for those who like to just sit back and have a few laughs. Nothing wrong with that. (I’m an insufferable film snob - - so you may just discount most of what I say about a movie like that. And I really do believe that it is everyone’s God given right to like a movie even if I don’t. That’s hard for me, but go ahead. Like it.)

The other film is Sky High, which actually got some good reviews. It’s a rather dear little movie about the offspring of superheroes and how they cope. It’s light and fun for the kids - - probably twelve and under or thereabouts. It’s PG, so you can bring most anyone with very few if any objections. So, wind down the summer with a fun little kids movie. It will be a relaxing break from the incredible and fun and wonderful Wyoming County Fair. Don’t we live in a great place, though? We have a terrific movie theater, a fantastic Fireman’s Carnival and then we get to end the summer with one of the finest county fairs in the state. (Thank you Kiwanis!)

So you have a great holiday weekend. Go to the fair, try a movie, go outside and take advantage of the fact that you live in such a beautiful place. Buy apples. What better way to celebrate the crisp sweetness of the autumn?

See you at the Dietrich!

Live at The Dietrich

By
Erica Rogler

What a night of bluegrass! Those ladies in Tennessee HeartStrings Band put on an amazing show last Wednesday at the Dietrich! We were their first stop on a month long tour of the country. I would love to see them come back to the theater next summer.

With the end of August here, it is time to switch gears and think of school and autumn. Autumn’s approach means the Dietrich is busy signing up students for art classes and events. If you think you or your children might be interested in taking classes at the Dietrich this fall, we have the perfect opportunity for you! Take part in our “More than the Movies Open House” on Saturday, September 10th from 6:00-8:00 pm. Learn about Dietrich Theater classes, meet the instructors, enjoy hands-on activities and register for classes.

One of the classes we will be featuring at the Open House is “Tile Making” with Steve Colley. Steve has his Masters Degree in Art from the Parson School of Design. A great example of his tile making, is in the entrance of the Lizza Studio in Tunkhannock. If you haven’t been to the Lizza Studio, it is a must see when you visit Tunkhannock. Anyway, back to Tile Making. Steve will lead students through the process of creating their own handmade tiles from design, the mold making process, printing, firing, and glazing. Classes will be held for eight Thursdays starting on September 15th to November 3rd from 7:00-8:30 pm. The total cost is $200.00 including all materials and the use of our kiln. Preregistration is required. Call 570-996-1500 to signup.

During the week of September 12th, the theater will start up its fall line up of classes. Monday is “Pottery and Sculpture” class from 7:00 –8:30 pm, Tuesday is “Open Studio” from 7:00 – 8:30 pm, Wednesday is Decorative Painting from noon – 3pm and Intergenerational Quilting, Thursday is Writers Group and Tile Making, and Friday is “Improv at the Dietrich. That schedule does not include yoga, which we offer Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturday, or any of our kids’ classes!

For kids, we will start “Mommy & Me Mixed Media”, “Jewelry for Kids”, “Quilting for Kids”, “Young at Art – Preschool Art, and “Discovering Great Artists, ages 5 –12”. Plus Tonya St. Clair offers Kindermusik at the Dietrich on Tuesdays and Saturdays. For more information about any of these classes, call 570-996-1500.

Now don’t forget about our fall film festival! If you would like a brochure, give the Dietrich a call at 570-996-1500. The fourteen movies we will feature in fourteen days include: The Beautiful Country, Caterina in the Big City, Look at Me, Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, Ladies in Lavender, Mad Hot Ballroom, Me and You and Everyone We Know, Murderball, Saraband, A Sidewalk Astronomer, Travellers and Magicians, Downfall, Watermarks, and The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill. What a line up! The festival starts on Friday, September 30th and run through Thursday, October 13th.

And gala night will be tremendous on September 30, the opening night of the fall film festival. Hors d’oeuvres by five area restaurants, Ladies in Lavender, dessert by Epicurean Delight, A Sidewalk Astronomer, which will be introduced by its director, Jeffrey Jacobs, who is also our film buyer and the manager of the Paris Theater in NYC. Tickets are $25.00 and reservations are required. Call the Dietrich at 570-996-1500 to reserve your seat today. If you have a question about filmmaking or the movie business, the Opening Night of the festival will be the place to be! Jeffrey will be there after Astronomer to answer any questions.

And don’t forget, Tonya St. Clair will start off our free Second Saturday Events this fall with a Kindermusik class for children ages six and under on Saturday, September 10th from 10:00 – 11:00 am. Call 570-996-1500 for details!
