At The Dietrich

Okay. One more week. In the world of movies where we have no power whatsoever, where we are mere specks in the eye of Hollywood filmmakers, it is totally impolitic to dump a movie the week it has received a best picture nomination for an Academy Award for Best Picture. Therefore, we are keeping Brokeback for one more week (gives you chance to catch it on the big screen which is where it really should be seen) and although Walk The Line didn’t get a best pix nomination, it did get nominated for best actor and actress, so we are going to hold that one, too.

Walk The Line is like the Energizer Bunny – it just keeps going and going and going for us. Saturday night, in it’s third week with us and many, many weeks old, it still nearly filled the Evans. Can you believe it? But I have to tell you, most of the staff has seen it at least twice – it’s just one of those movies that pulls you back to see it again and again. The music is superb and the acting is stunning. And it’s a great story. No matter what difficulties he faced in his life with love and addiction, he was always true to his art. He made beautiful music, and that music has tremendous appeal decades after he wrote it. If you have missed it in its run with us do try to see it. The sound track, in full DTS, is worth the price of admission, and the story just catches you up and won’t let you go. It will only be with us this one more week, so see it now, while you can.

Brokeback, too, is in its final week with us. I have to say that I have been wonderfully swamped with phone calls and e.mails telling me thanks for bringing it in and telling me how much people enjoyed it. Those calls and e.mails meant the world to me because I was taken off guard by the original four calls and one letter wherein the writers were so furious with me. It’s funny, but you can have a great night here where people come in happy as could be and we’re all having a good time and then one person will come out of the theater and throw a fit and you just can’t remember the folks who were happy. You take that mean scene home with you and process it again and again.

But it has all worked out and we are happy at the wonderfully positive feedback we have received. And for the folks that didn’t want it shown, it will only be here another week and then, like all movies, good or bad, it will be gone, the town will still be standing and all once again will be right with the world.

Because, after all, it’s just a movie.

Now, coming on February 10 we have the PG family film Pink Panther starring the incredible Steve Martin. It’s silly and funny and good for a laugh here in the middle of the winter blahs (although we have very little to complain about this January). So plan on bringing the family for a night of good popcorn and good laughs. Sounds good, doesn’t it?

If you’ve been thinking about the Jez Lowe concert get your tix now. We only have forty tickets left two weeks before the concert, so it is sure to sell out. You mustn’t wait or you won’t get in. Just a cautionary note.

And this week we start the discussions for One County One Book One Movie. All two hundred books the library ordered have been given out! Is that phenomenal or what? We actually didn’t expect that. I thought the book might be a little too heavy for most folks, but boy, was I ever wrong! Warren Bareisse, who will lead most of the discussions, always thought it was a novel people would like to sink their teeth into. Tip of the hat to Warren – you were so right!

So that’s all the news from here. We just keep truckin’ along. Come see us this weekend. We’ll be making popcorn for you.

Live at The Dietrich

What a week of movies we are having! The two biggest Golden Globe winners are now showing at the Dietrich – Walk the Line and Brokeback Mountain.
I have already seen Walk the Line a few times (It’s a favorite of mine!) I am very impressed with Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon’s portrayals of Johnny Cash and June Carter. I also can’t believe that they did all of their own singing! We will have Walk the Line through Thursday, so stop by and see it. This is a movie you must see on the big screen; don’t wait for the DVD to come out!

We also have a new exhibit at the Dietrich this month featuring the artwork of Ed Parkinson, Fred Lawrenson and Dr. Mel Wolk. Dr. Wolk’s work with photography is amazing. In “Timeless Metamorphosis”, Mel features the clock in front of Dietrich. Somehow the clock faces in that colorful piece look 3-D. A larger collection of Fred Lawrenson and Ed Parkinson’s work is currently on display at the Lizza Fine Art Studios on Bridge Street in Tunkhannock. Ed Parkinson’s watercolor nature landscapes capture the beauty of northern Pennsylvania. Margie, our Program Director, especially likes the fall colors in some of his autumn paintings. And Fred Lawrenson’s acrylic pieces are so intricate. We enjoyed reading the descriptions of Fred’s paintings at the Meet the Artist Reception at the Lizza Fine Art Studios on January 15th.

In February, we will have a great Saturday Series program for children and families. On Saturday, February 11th, at 11:00 am, Mary Baker will return to the Dietrich with your favorite stories and songs and will be accompanied by children’s author, Isabel Wilner. Isabel, now a permanent Tunkhannock resident, will tell “The Magic Umbrella” and other of her favorites from around the world. A few of the books Isabel authored include “B is for Bethlehem”, “The Baby’s Game Book”, and “The Poetry Troupe”. Admission to “Stories & Songs with Mary Baker & Isabel Wilner” is free and is sponsored by State Farm Insurance.

And please take part in Tunkhannock Public Library’s and the Dietrich’s “Wyoming County Reads: One County, One Book, One Movie” project. Pick up your free copy of “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding and come out for our first book discussion. Dr. Warren Bareiss, a Communications Instructor at Penn State Hazleton will lead this first discussion next Wednesday, February 1 at 7:00 pm at the Tunkhannock Public Library. Refreshments will be provided and admission is free.

Quilting for Kids, ages 6 and up

"Friendship Star" - Experience the joys of team quilting while playing our new quilting games. Each student will take home their own quilt. Stitch one star in three lessons or stitch a sky full.
