Boy! Did MI3 not live up to attendance expectations! And it’s a good movie. People who come out of it say it’s terrific. All three of them (just a joke – it wasn’t that bad). My personal theory is that people are simply tired of Tom Cruise. Really, really tired. You can only take so much crazy and then you want to grab a cup of tea, your favorite blanky and settle into a cozy chair where you can meditate on the meaning of life. You do not want to go to a movie with the crazy person bouncing around the screen. Still, nationwide, it brought in $48,000,000 it’s first weekend in this country alone, so there are obviously a lot of folks who don’t agree with me. I just wish that Mr. Cruise would sit down and shut up for a long time before his next movie comes out. It would do us all a world of good.

I forgot to tell you this week that Hoot, the thoroughly delightful film about a group of kids saving an owl’s habitat in Florida, also stars Jimmy Buffet. Plus it has his music on the sound track. Plus he produced it. So if any of you out there are Jimmy Buffet fans, this is the movie to see.

For the teens, we’re bringing in a little bit of fun - - Scary Movie 4. Sure it’s tasteless and silly and drivel, but it will make you laugh. This does for horror films what Police Academy movies did for …well…police academies. It takes on every horror movie cliché ever done in scary movies. Funny, light, fluff.

Okay - - heads up for the Golden Days of Radio Players May 23rd performance, free in the Fassett. One of the plays is original - - Mystery of the Steamtown Ghost - - and the other is the wonderfully witty Philadelphia Story. Now, doesn’t that sound like fun?

We’re getting close to having 1/3 of our $300,000.00 loan payment. We hope to make that payment in the next week or two. Then we hope to raise the rest by autumn. I know it may seem like a lot (for the lot) but that was the price and we wanted to protect it and the theater. We wanted to make sure the theater had room to grow in the decades to come, and we wanted to make sure the lot was beautified. But we do need to pay for it before the expansion can begin. Therefore, letters will be going out to lots of people in the next few weeks asking if you can help us. We hope that you can find it in your hearts to do so. (If you can’t, you know we love you anyway.) But if you could help us, we would be very, very grateful.

So this Saturday, our beautiful and smart-as-a-whip Erica will be married to our equally gorgeous and smart-as-another-whip, Omar. We are so delighted. The two of them are simply the best – kind, loving, bright, devoted to their jobs, funny and so, so dear. We knew they were meant for each other the minute Erica started working here, and within a few months it became obvious that they were smitten with each other. And from smitten grew like and from like came love. We old broads at the theater wish them only the best this life has to offer. They are two precious souls and we love them with all our hearts. Their wedding day will be one of the happiest days of our lives. (And we’ve already told them they can count on us to babysit any little ones that may arrive in the coming years.)

You know, I think weddings and funerals are universal and personal. You can’t go to anyone’s wedding without reliving your own, nor can you go to the burial ceremony of a friend without reliving the funerals of all those you have loved and lost. But weddings are blessed with the sweetness of great expectations, of high hopes and of memories buoyed by love. Happy wedding day, our darling young ones - - you deserve it. We revel in your happiness!

See you at the Dietrich!

Summer at the Dietrich is going to be amazing! There are so many camps for kids and plenty of artistic opportunities for adults and teens. The camps we have lined up are not only fun but are educational as well. One of my favorite camps we hold each summer is Digital Arts Camp with Rand Whipple. From Monday to Friday, June 26 to June 30 at 2:00 - 4:30 pm, children between the ages 8 - 12 will have the opportunity to explore the digital arts including claymation, robotics and special effects. It’s so great to see the students work in teams and come up with movie concepts, scenery and little clay figures for their films. The movies will be made with digital cameras and computers. As we all know, children use technology with such ease so this class is a perfect fit for this age group. You should see how quickly they learn how to make a movie. Admission for the week is $50. You can register your digital artists by calling 996-1500.

And if that class sounds interesting to you or is something that one of your older children may be interested in, Rand Whipple will be holding a digital film making workshop “Move Over Mr. Spielberg” from 7:00 - 9:00 pm during the same week. Adults and students age thirteen and up are invited to create digital films of their own. Using everything from clay actors to human ones, this class will shoot, edit, score and output several short films in the course of the week. Admission is also $50 for the week and all materials are provided.

Then in July, our artists-in-residence Amy and Steve Colley will be teaching an “All About Drawing Camp”. Using the artwork in award winning children’s books as examples, students will learn about basic concepts of drawing including Line, Shape, Texture, Value, Color and Space. Some of my favorite illustrations are in the children’s books “The Polar Express”, “Good Night Moon”, “Pat the Bunny” and “Tuesday”. I can’t wait to see what examples, Amy will use for this class. Her enthusiasm for the arts and children’s literature is catching. This class will be held the week of July 10th to the 14th from 10:00 am -11:30 am. Admission is $50. Call the theater at 996-1500 to reserve.

So find a camp or class that interests you, and join us at the Dietrich. Some of the camps and classes are starting to fill up, so now is the time to register!
