Susquehanna River Water Trail
Laceyville to Falls, 33 miles. Mountain scenery, canal remnants, several islands open to camping. Class I-II
Bowman Creek
SR 292 to Eatonville, 6 miles. Easy rapids, pools. Class I-II
Meshoppen Creek
Kaiserville to Meshoppen, 7 miles. Class V. A very challenging stream for experts.
Lower Mehoopany Creek
Forkston to Mehoopany, 6 miles. Easier rapids, creek often braids. Class I-II.
Tunkhannock Creek
Nicholson to Tunkhannock, 16 miles. Riffles, rapids, and pools that change some each year with snow melts and floods. Class I-III
Lake Carey
182 acres. This natural lake is accessible to the public. The land around the lake is privately owned. B-7
Oxbow Lake
60 acre natural lake. Fishing from shore only. No boats permitted. Avery Station Road, Lemon Township, B-7
Stevens Lake
62 acres. This shallow lake features forests and fields with a marshy inlet. Permit needed. B-6
3: Vosburg Neck
The best area for birdwatching in the county. Easy birding by road or on miles of trails along the river and through 1,000 acres of mixed lowland and upland forests. Breeding species include Bald Eagles, American Woodcocks, Indigo Buntings, warblers, orioles, cuckoos, and flycatchers. Three organizations operate on the Neck: Endless Mountains Nature Center, Camp Lackawanna, and Howland Preserve.
4: Iroquois Trail
A 1.8 mile trail on a former railroad bed through mixed forest with plenty of migrating warblers. Songbirds include tanagers, grosbeaks, buntings, cuckoos, and orioles are also present.
5: Lazy Brook Park (Lazybrook)
A great place for picnicking and casual bird watching. Tunkhannock Creek flows next to the park attracting numerous bird species. Louisiana Waterthrush, Warbling Vireo, Blackthroated Green Warbler, Baltimore Oriole, Mallard and mergansers.
6: Lake Carey
Park at Mason Road and walk around the lake (3.3 miles) to view a wide variety of migrating waterfowl including scaup, grebes, terns and gulls, and loons. Kingfishers, herons, and eagles are present in summer.
7: Oxbow Lake
Look for migrating ducks including scaup, Ring-necked, Wood, Pintail and spring migrants at this PA Fish & Boat Commission lake access and parking area that is handicap accessible. A trail around the lake is open seasonally. Please refrain from entering the area reserved for summer campers.
