France, 1770. Marianne, a painter, is commissioned to do the wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young woman who has just left the convent. She arrives under the guise of companionship, observing her by day and secretly painting her by firelight at night. As the tow women orbit one another, intimacy and attrqaction grow as they share  first moments of freedom. The portrait soon becomes a collaborative act and testament to their love. Portrait of a Lady on Fire was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globes.
