Up Hill & Down Dale: The World of Alf Wight, aka James Herriot
At the Dietrich Theater in downtown Tunkhannock
Sunday, May 19 at 3:00 p.m.
Presenter: Walter Broughton
Admission: Free
This lecture offers a richly illustrated portrait of the life of the Yorkshire veterinarian and author, Alf Wight. Raised in Glasgow by English parents, Wight secured work in the Dales and began writing stories in the evenings. His affectionate accounts of his often-averse patients and the dour farmers who owned them have charmed millions and still do today with PBS’s release of Season Four of All Creatures Great and Small. Walter Broughton is a descendant of folk from nearby Lancashire and vacationed some years ago in the Dales. As a sociologist, now retired, he especially appreciates Wight’s portrait of rural English ways. A summer resident of Lake Carey, he previously spoke at the Dietrich about railroad resorts at the turn of the last century.
